Did I tell you guys, Asimov's rejected "World Enough and Time." Not sure where to try next, maybe Clarkesworld.
In the meantime, there's a several-chapter section of Marooner's Haven that in my judgment hangs together coherently and could be published as a stand-alone piece. Only, well, Emma's wheelchair is so hopelessly clunky. I've got to find something more techno and hip. I read up on hovercraft, but that tech seems rather cumbersome for a personal mobility device. Seems to me the fans would also be rather noisy. I toyed with mag-lev, but that has the drawback of needing defined tracks. And superconductors also seem from what I can gather to have the same restriction. What do you guys think about the possibility of somehow harnessing the planet's own magnetic field to create a hover effect? It's a lot more mod and sexy than a clunky old wheelchair.
It's not really clear to me that anything greatly more advanced than today's electric mobility scooters will be feasible for the foreseeable future. Certainly minor technological improvements, since as the ability to swivel in place. And you could have them powered by radioisotope generators rather than batteries. But still the same basic scooters.
Howard's just gotta be first!

DeleteTruth? I personally kind of *like* the wheelchair--kinda retro?
