  1. Howard must like rainy June days, since he's first again on another one!

Bridge already flooded, and only half done. Not to worry: gots every thing I needses.

  2. Wish you were a neighbor, puddle. My 1994 Escort has died the Final Death. I keep thinking of all the parts you might use, but have no idea what or when.

    1. Susan: windshield wiper assembly. If you can get it out, I'd pay for shipping!

Hard to believe they can die, though. My sympathies. ♥

    2. My brother is more adept. I'll ask him to have a go at it.

    3. Talked to brother. He needs more specifics. If you need the motor that makes the arms swish back & forth he might not be able to get it out. The actual wiper arms that the rubber blades go into are more doable.

    4. There seem to be three parts ~~ the motor, a coupler, and the arms. The motor and the coupler are the ones that are difficult to find. If it canna be done, not to worry. Ludmilla will live till she dies. And my garage is genius at making stuff work, so far. Prolly nothing will happen again, lol! Thanks for thinking about me. xox

  3. Sad news for some of us: Author Iain M. Banks died two nights ago. As Neil Gaiman said, "If you've never read any of his books, read one of his books. Then read another. Even the bad ones were good, and the good ones were astonishing."

  4. I wasn't able to click through on the NSA links listener posted last night, but today I posted the URLs into the address box of IE and was able to read them. I was distinctly unimpressed. Ed Bott on ZDNet makes a big deal of the fact that the Post changed (regarding the companies involved) from "which knowingly participated" to "whose cooperation is essential." But the idea that the companies cooperated without being aware of the fact is simply laughable. He makes less of the more important change from saying the location, etc, of "a person" could be determined to saying this is true for "foreign targets." But not only do we know that NSA shares its information with British intelligence, we know from 5-6 years ago (PRISM is VERY old news) that British intelligence runs a similar program that includes Americans in its scope, then shares the information with NSA. This allows each country to gain information on its own citizens without technically violating the law.

Bob Cesca on The Daily Banter seems mostly invested in a personal attack on the Post reporter. His principal substantive point relates to ambiguity of the term "direct access." There is no denying that the government has access to data on these servers. Whether this access is "direct" depends on exactly how you define the term.

Meanwhile, I would recommend this article from today's Secrecy News of the Federation of American Scientists. It focuses, properly, on efforts to keep the American public ignorant of these programs -- efforts that at times appear to have risen to the level of outright lies -- and on the failure of the oversight mechanisms adopted in 1974 to perform as intended.

    1. Thanks, Bill. A helpfully sober article.

  5. I don’t know Bill—for me, a good part of being almost unable to take this seriously IS that Greenwald is the “reporter”. . . . I’ve really disliked him for long *because* he is a catastrophizer of the first water. He is also an Egoist. He “arranges” facts so he can be disturbed, and paints them red in order to disturb others. He is, at core, profoundly dishonest. And this is how he makes his living.

  6. Also, likely, since I spent ten years married to an engineer that did sub-contracting for NSA, that none of it is new, nor very surprising to me.

    1. The Verizon stuff -- which Greenwald has nothing to do with reporting -- is new to me. And maybe in part because it is new I find it the more shocking of the two revelations.

  7. Hi guys,

Warm, sunny day yesterday but today was overcast and by early evening had turned rainy and chilly.

Dad is doing well. He actually went food shopping Saturday afternoon while Sis was out. When she got home he asked her to help bring in the groceries, and then proceeded to do most of it himself anyway.

He saw the orthopedist this afternoon. The splint came off, though he still has to wear his arm in a sling. He's right on schedule for healing and needs to go back next week.

We've seen signs that the intrepid explorer returns to civilization to eat and use the litter box, but she does not socialize. No one has actually seen her for days. I miss her. Nicky is here, but it's not the same as having my little gray kitty in the room.

Nothing much else. I finished the first volume of Jesus of Nazareth and have moved on to the second volume.

Thinking about buying some Frankie Laine records, or at least MP3 downloads. I've always really liked his rendition of "That's My Desire" and I think he's under-appreciated. We shall see what amazon.com has. The computer crashed last night when I was trying to check the situation out.

    1. Ooh, we just had a sighting! Vivie Kitty came in for a snack. She looked at me when I called her, but returned to the attic.

If I could catch her when she's in the litter box, which is at the furthest part of the room from the door, I might have a chance to get over there and across the landing to close the attic door. But as long as she is closer to the door and thus to the landing and attic across than I am, it's pointless to try.

I suppose she's content or she'd come back... *sniff*

    2. Have you tried the tuna fish trick? They tend to get so occupied with the fish, you can pull quite a number of things whilst they're busy. . . .

    3. Glad to hear you' Dad is doing well.

    4. She's so enthralled, she won't even come back for her tuna. :(
