  2. My best wished to Tom and family, Cat.

I think I have figured out where to find marriage, birth and death records for the branch of my family that settled near Toronto in 1794. The local museum has records from what was probably the only church there in the late 18th century and very early 19th century--and I was able to verify that my great-great-great grandparents were members of the congregation (which evidently still exists, albeit under a changed name).

  7. It has always seemed to me that the DOMA is in conflict with Article IV, Section 1 of the US Constitution:

    Article. IV.

    Section. 1.

Full Faith and Credit shall be given in each State to the public Acts, Records, and judicial Proceedings of every other State. And the Congress may by general Laws prescribe the Manner in which such Acts, Records and Proceedings shall be proved, and the Effect thereof.

  8. Last night I discovered that the first church (Lutheran) in the wilds of Markham, Ontario, began in my great-grat-great-grandparents' home around 1794. Evidently the church's records of marriages, births and deaths going back that far still exist, and I will be able to view a copy at the museum when I visit. With a bit of luck that will help to elucidate early family relationships.
