Thanks for the link, Cat! Just saw your most recent posts too. May you have a gentle storm experience!
After the staff meeting tomorrow morning, I'm making one last run to the bank and maybe grocery as well. Planning to take an afternoon nap so I can stay up late and see how the storm unfolds.
Hoping puddle gets online and doesn't lose power altogether.
Ohhh wow. At the 5am report, Sandy's speed had increased 10mph to 85mph and pressure dropped to 946mb!! That's just 2mb higher than the record! What will the 8am report bring? :- o
Oh, Alan! I wondered if there would be a "ripple effect" after the 7.7. Hopefully it's all just settling down , not gearing up...though we have been warned. There may no longer be a place on Earth that is a safe place to live.
When you first mentioned Toronto yesterday I was thinking that it seemed pretty far west to be seriously effected by an Atlantic hurricane. I could see Montreal having problems.
I was surprised to see a report that Chicago might get enough wind to make Lake Michigan treacherous.
Follow-on to one of Cat's posts last night: The large majority of the political fundraising e-mails I get are from candidates I've actually contributed to, usually because they were endorsed by the Council for a Livable World or DFA or somebody. Doesn't mean I always recall the name. And a lot carry the names of campaign managers or somebody other than the candidates themselves. The ones that are annoying is when I contribute to one campaign and keep getting e-mails from, let's say, the Maine Democratic Party. But these days shortage of time mostly forces me to ignore these political e-mails without opening them. Same with the ads I get from companies I've bought from and whose sales I might potentially be interested in.
Yes, the Do Not Call list specifically excludes charities and candidates. That's as it should be, I think. The annoying part is that I still get calls after I've set up a monthly contribution. Or when they don't remind me I've already contributed.
Yes, it is very annoying. The other day I got a call from UNICEF. I tried, not too successfully, to be polite to the young woman. It wasn't her fault that I don't feel at the moment an increase in my monthly contribution is possible. But, really! Maybe they should consider that asking a reliable donor to give more might be distressing to the donor; that maybe she is already giving as much as she can. Such calls make me feel guilty and uncomfortable, and just creates ill will.
My cousin and godmother Linda has suffered a heart attack. She's had them before, but this one is apparently much worse. I set up a candle page for her.
Bill! I heard they're expecting waves on Lake Huron of 38ft!!
Cat, yes, such calls create ill will all right! YOU have nothing to feel guilty for, they do!
The other annoying call I sometimes get is when people call the Library and we answer "Deborah Rawson Memorial Library" and they ask to speak to Deborah Rawson.
That inspired me to go back and actually read the newspaper story. They say 33-ft waves tomorrow pushed by 60-mph northerly winds blowing directly down the lake. But it's dead calm right now.
I haven't looked up the details, but my eyeball report is that today is windy and rainy, but bright, nothing all that unusual for late October. If not for all the reporting on Sandy, I wouldn't have thought anything of today's weather. On the other hand, I have been putting off going on FB and checking on friends there, afraid of bad news.
Gee, the Tappan Zee was the one I always used. One of the many, many reasons I hated living on Long Island is that there's absolutely no way to escape a disaster. If you don't leave NY days in advance you ain't goin' anywhere! My daughter on L.I. texted me at 3:53 p.m. today. "Power is out. Wind is NUTS!"
Susan, I've added her to the list of people I'm worrying about and praying for. Have an old friend in Merrick. We've lost touch, but I've been worried about her and her husband. Even if I could find her number, it would be useless to call...
People said Orillia was too far away to get anything. I still say they're wrong. The weather network's map shows this going up to Ottawa 'n Quebec too...
Sandy knocked a roof off a building in Ohio. A person has died in MD and 5 have died in NY. =Sigh=
Bill, I saw video today of people surfing in 20-25ft waves on Lake Michigan at Chicago!
This is a record breaking storm in many ways.
But what I'm saddest about is that the center hit Cape May!
My son saw a flock of geese flying NORTH around sunset. At least they have the wing power to get ahead of the storm. I imagine that biologists will need to set out corn for the birds in key areas, for when they have to migrate for the second time!
The winds here are roaring down the chimney (we have a stove), though they have lowered our expected high winds from 75 to 70, now to 60. That's still enough to take down a White Pine or two, but not as utterly scary as the higher number.
We will probably still sleep downstairs, just incase.
Mah*Sweetie planned to leave work at 5:30pm and come home to clean out the garage and put his new car in. But, they got a crisis to fix at work, so he had to work late. Fortunately, I cleaned the garage in daylight to surprise him! :-D When he called to tell me he'd be late, I told him and he was sooo relieved! :-)
He's home now and we're just hanging out and waiting it out. So far the lights have only flickered once, but we're way up here and it's still coming.
I managed to procure the last two D batteries in town today. I also got a flu shot. I feel like I've done all I can. LOL!
Early evening I rescued Mizzen and Spinnaker, our two seven month old kittens. They're indoor cats, but we allow them out on our screened in back porch. Most of the time they behave pretty well, but once in awhile they climb the screens. I heard them mewing and took a look. BOTH of them were up on the crossbeams at the top of the porch, and the wind was picking up! I had already put away the porch furniture, so had to fetch a chair fast. Silly kitties! =^. .^= =^. .^=
And Howard is first...yet again.
ReplyDeleteA couple of notes at the end of the last thread.

ReplyDelete8am = holding at same. Looks like it's going to come right up Delaware Bay and destroy Cape May (and much else)!! :-(
DeleteYIKES!! Our expected wind speed has just increased to 35-45mph expected with gusts to 75mph (hurricane force)!
ReplyDeleteToronto forecast is for modest winds and light rain, nothing much. Low-lying parts of NYC beginning to flood at high tide.
ReplyDelete--Alan
Another magnitude 4 earthquake not far from the one that happened about 10 days ago to our west, along the San Andreas fault. Foreshocks?

DeleteSo we all need to live until we die. ;-)
Be well.

20-25ft waves are possible on the Geeat Lakes!
DeleteCould be 8 ft swells on Lake Champlain!!
90mph with gusts to 115mph and pressure now down to 943mb...just one millibar above the record!!
ReplyDeleteSandy is all trick and no treat!!

ReplyDeleteI lit candles Renee. My Mom had them so I know how scary they can be. Everything just stops. Please keep us posted. ♥

ReplyDeleteJust saw this:
ReplyDelete3:23pm Oct 29
Breaking News: ABC News reports Gov. Cuomo plans to shut down Tappan Zee Bridge, first cross Hudson span to close.

DeleteThanks, Cat. She called about an hour ago. Their power came back on unexpectedly and they are really grateful! Hope it stays on.
DeleteThe wind is picking up, though it's still only gusting.
ReplyDeleteA lady on FB is posting pics of NJ and NY towns underwater. Scary!
It's currently 59 degs with light rain according to Channel 40's web page. Sounds innocuous enough...

Apparently, Atlantic City has been submerged since about 11:30 this morning.
DeleteWe're very lucky! power is out to some 200,000 throughout the state, including in towns surrounding Springfield. So far, Please God, ours is still on.
Daughter is hoping for a school closing tomorrow, but so far it is looking unlikely.
ReplyDeleteMy cousin Bonnie says Linda will really love the candles.
It's natural for a kid to hope for a school closing, I suppose.

DeleteTrue that, Cat! They don't get to go out there unless we're right there too.
