Good-night CapeCod

  1. Howard's first on this fine flood watch day!

Shut everything down except the download of AVG before going to bed early (ten). At four, up and checking, had just about fifty percent. . . . Earthlink shuts me down every twelve hours, so I knew I wouldn't make it, but *some* download programs let you pick up where you left off. When I got up at seven, sure enough: off line. Got back on, and the AVG restarted -- looked for a moment like it was starting from zero, but picked up *really* fast on the first 14MB. Which is about 4MB short of where it was at four a.m., but MUCH better than a kick in the pants. If it'd really gone back to zero, I'd have had to find another anti virus program, because I'm never going to have more than 12 hours to download. . . . Wish me luck today.

    1. Good luck with your download. I've had cable (now fiber optic) for so long I forget what dial-up was like.

I like the Norton anti-virus program, but I have no idea how big the download is.

    2. I second everything Bill said.

Seems to me it's possible to buy Norton on a disc. Do you have a CD drive?

  2. Alan ~~ I wouldn't describe two beers or two glasses of wine with dinner as "overindulgence." It's more than I usually have, but an occasional minor indulgence when the situation calls for it is surely justified.

    1. Alan, unless the unaccustomed indulgence made you ill, I tend to agree with Bill. You aren't, I think, in danger of becoming debauched. *smile*

  4. Here's a poem I'm thinking of sending to a contest. Is it too whiny?

    Crystal Clear

The days go by, gray and all alike
And I can’t remember when there was no pain
If there was a time when my heart was whole
It wasn’t yesterday, but many lives ago.

Then a word or a slant of sun reminds me
And you’re crystal clear before me
Your laughing face, your reaching arms, your loving heart.
So close and real that I can touch

And find an empty memory in my hand
    A mocking wisp of yesterday
Nothing to hold, nothing to kiss, nothing to keep but heartache
Through all the bleak tomorrows of my life.

    1. No more whiny than the Poe peom most of us think of as "Nevermore," although I don't think that's the actual title.

    2. "The Raven"

Well, Poe I certainly ain't. If only I had half his talent! But thanks, Bill...I think. *smile*

  5. Strange -- for a while there, every comment was numbered. Alas, couldn't get a comment box, so.

The AVG is up and running, and having the same connection problems I'm having trying to update definitions. . . . But I like it's way of going a whole lot better than McAfee's. To say the least. Doing a whole computer scan right now.

    1. A whole computer scan is probably a good idear.

Sorry, can't remember if you said: Did you ever get the new modem working again?

    2. Nope. After the hours long trial, I'm not about to try again. May try looking for another one. . . . AM looking for another one -- but as nearly as I can tell it's simply trial and error. . . .

  6. It's amazing how much a couple of Walker's shortbreads can improve one's outlook.

I bought a sampler tin from the Vermont Country Store, the tin being a special one commemorating the Queen's diamond jubilee.. Originally gave it to Mum, who was delighted with it. But, she told me the shortbread was too rich for her. I felt terrible. Should have realized that beforehand, since she's become so limited in what she can eat. She didn't seem upset, just told me to take them and enjoy them. And they have been a lovely treat.

Getting close to the end now, and I'm wondering about getting some more, if they come plain, without the fancy tin. Haven't made up my mind. But they certainly are a nice touch of home.

  7. Here's another poem, one that's definitely going to the contest:

    The Hours

As day begins with the warmth some find
in a gentle voice and welcoming eyes, I look
for the sun in vain and think of you, dear friend.

At noon, while the blaring day is busy
around me, I close myself within my heart
a moment and think of you, dear love.

When day is ending, and shadows fall before homes
    where love's beacon-lamp burns brighter after love's
return, I think of you, dear partner.

And, at last, when midnight opens the dome
of the skies to let the innumerable stars
gaze down on our world, so small, yet with space
enough to break our hearts, I think of you, beloved,
and I weep that such miracles can be.

    1. The reading fee covers up to three poems, but I may just send the two.

Puddle, do you ever enter poetry contests? It's been ages since I tried any except the NFB Writers Division. But I figured there could be no harm in trying.

    2. Never did. Always figured just getting something published *was* winning a contest. Was a judge for the Maryland Poetry contest one year. Dreadful experience: out of hundreds of entries, only three even worth considering. The rest of the judges and I all agreed. Refused to ever do it again, lol!

Lost interest in even being published a while back: blogs and baby seem/feel fine for me. Tis enough.

But I say: go for it, and find another, too! You're paying for three, take three!

  8. Well, passed the whole computer scan with flying colors. . . Still downloading definitions (again). . . . Amazing how tired this makes one. . . .
