Planting Democracy..and not just seeds

I'm planning to have some buttons made that say Doug RACINE for Governor,
so I won't have to waste paper using those button-sized stickers.
His campaign director kindly sent me the template! :-)

  1. Howard is still first.

Love the flowers in the wheelbarrow.

Today it is officially one whole year I am smoke-free.

  2. * * * Congratulations, Susan! * * *

I am sure glad to hear it. That's not an easy thing to quit. One of our five kids took it up but did quit a few years ago, to my immense relief. His cough is just about gone now. How do you feel now, any changes you can tell?

  3. BTW, the wheelbarrow of flowers is in my front yard. :~)

  5. puddle, I'm now suspecting you have a break in the line.
Look for a place along the path of it that seems a bit wetter than the rest, or mushier than it oughta be.

  7. Differences? Night and Day. I don't cough, my heart doesn't race. I have more endurance, great lung capacity, no more burn holes in car, clothes, rug. I don't smell disgusting. Teeth are whiter, skin has some color. My house smells fresh and so do the quilts I make. I can go to a movie that lasts longer than two hours ... couldn't before because I was such an addict. Never used to cry over much of anything, armored myself with smoke, now I tear up pretty easily, but that just makes me feel more human. I can hang out with nonsmokers, couldn't before, either they would crack or I would. I can go anywhere, anytime and stay as long as I want without being ruled by an addiction.

The bad part? I've gained 40 lbs., I'm 5' tall. I'm enormously fat and I absolutely hate it. Have been trying to lose for 14 weeks, Spark People *and* Weight Watchers, but the weight just isn't coming off, even though I'm extremely active and walk up to 12 miles a day taking care of business. I had to go buy a bathing suit and it was just soul-crushing. Last year I was a size 10. My new bathing suit is a 24-26. Makes me want to puke (but not smoke).

  10. Talked to kiddle last night ~~ the line is a flexible black pvc hose. More likely, he thinks that he and his dad disturbed the "spring box" (which is just a dam). Would need mountain climbing gear to get there. It's the river for me until he gets back in July. . . .

Susan, my sister, after a lifetime of boycotting Atkins, finally bit the bullet, and has lost 20 pounds so far. Her Atkins buddy is a woman who switched from weight watchers because she was gaining weight on 1200 calories a day. I gainED those 40 pounds, too, last time I quit (for six months). And CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

    PROUD MOM ALERT!

Son*in(*ME was interviewed today for Boston Online and for CT Public Radio.
He was instrumental in creating the shorebird maps that the crews are using to locate the birds most in need! He did aerial studies several years ago and these have been commingled with Google Earth. The birds are in really bad straights. It's wrenching after all the work he has done, and his work also becomes more vital than ever.

  15. Congratulations, Proud Mom! Actually, I've been wondering if I'd see him on The News Hour or somewhere.

  16. Congratulations Susan, and good luck with the weight loss. I'm trying to take off excess weight (I should take off about 30 pounds), and it's not easy; Miyoko routinely gives me more than I should have, and my "clean plate" conditioning from childhood doesn't help. But I can cut back on lunch readily enough. Tried hoodia before, and that seemed to help. Also tried a steady diet of Carnation Instant Breakfast for a while, with good results. Trying just plain willpower this time.

  17. Puddle, I'm sorry about your current troubles, water and computer. We had the same confusion about whether to download SP2 or SP3. The instructions were far from clear. But, can't you just download them both? I mean, I did... no buying anything.

Alan, you beat me to Mark Twain. The story about the fellow and his overstuffed green armchair is called The Amazing Adventures of Jack Flanders. There are pirates and wizards and flying sheep and all kinds of good stuff. But, be warned. Jack Flanders is addictive. 8)

Susan, your recipe sounds scrumptious! I like even ordinary cauliflower...

Renee, when will you be finished for the summer?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Cat, finals for spring quarter are this week. Summer quarter starts at the end of the month, but I'm only teaching one class instead of two. Unfortunately.

  19. Mine did that once today too.

  21. If you have a speedy connection, indeed. Service pack 3, includes service pack 2, so it's saner to get 3 ~~ but it is EVERY update that Microsoft has made since 2003. I can't begin to imagine how many days it would take. And earthlink disconnects me every twelve hours just to prove it can. And the line is full of garbage. I'd have to be a MUCH bigger optimist than I am to think I'd get a clean install from a download, though updates are another thing. I think when I get caught up, I'll let them do automatic updates (maybe). . . .

  22. Also occurred to me that Micro$oft's instructions to dowload sp1a, were simply a CYA response to losing the lawsuit to Sun. But I figure as soon as I assume that, they'll be serious, and I'll mess up the install because of it. Kiddle's very blase about it: he just turns on automatic updates and walks away from his computer. He's forgotten totally what being on dialup means. He's not alone. If you order a new windows 7 from Dell, you have to *special order* it with a modem. It's not available at the web site even as an option, you have to talk with a sales rep.
