American Cardinal

Today is the memorial service for my friend Nan, an author who died of cancer a few months ago. The Cardinal is the symbol she asked us to remember her by.

I am safely ensconced in my new home. I had some friends who helped along the way. Otherwise I would still be unpacking (not that there are not still some boxes around.)

The weather has become wet and cold but I haven't had much time to enjoy the balcony anyway. Since one whole wall of my condo is window, I am enjoying the view.

Sydney and Sparky are adapting nicely.

I have been spending lots of bux for things to help maximize the little storage room I have here, not to mention restocking my fridge. Today I will look for an area rug for the living room which should be the last of the big shopping. OTOH, I saved money by having a carpenter friend saw down the legs of my side table which is now my coffee table.

    Life is good. :-D

  5. I looked out my windows this afternoon at ... a deer! A deer in my very own yard! I knew they were living around here because I see their tracks in the snow in the winter. But I never thought I'd see one in the daytime just standing in the yard.

They're extremely alert too, because it saw me looking at it even through the window and ran across the street out front to go back to the area they actually live in. Food must be very scarce for the wildlife this year. I've also had rabbits coming up to eat bird seed in the daytime. Very unusual.

  6. Alan, I know you usually peep in at what is Late Night for me. Just wanted to tell you that my definition of conservative and liberal is not at all the way you described them. Here on Planet Susan a conservative is a person who fears change, who worries about someone else getting some of "theirs", who wants to monitor the way other people live. I see liberals as willing to change, wanting the best chance for everyone, equality for all in gender, race, nationality, etc. I see radicals (myself included) as those who fall off both ends of the political Bell Curve. Except I think right-wing radicals are a shade or two crazier than left wing radicals. Because right wingers can and have physically hurt or killed people, and I'm not aware of any of that from left-wingers.

Did you ever get to finish your theramin? I've wondered about it from time to time.

Glad to hear you're getting settled in. I think congratulations are in order.

I keep thinking I'm getting caught up but it never quite seems to happen.

The work that kept me so busy last week is finished now. Don't know what, if anything, is coming up next. But I fell behind on my e-mail and am making only the most modest progress on going through all the things that didn't seem urgent at the time.

And so many other things are going on. This evening a mumber of us that will be putting on the Chicago Worldcon in 2012 met with the people who are putting on the 2011 Worldcon in Reno. Very good, very informative to get together with them. Most of us will be helping out in Reno to gain experience. Then a group went out to dinner. Good company, but the restaurant was too expensive and the meat (several types grilled on skewers, all you can eat) was too salty. The salad bar was extraordinary, however, and the dessert and coffee superb.

Tomorrow I go to a book discussion. Then there's a science writers' lunch on Thursday, another book discussion next Saturday, and a play and dinner the following day. And other lunch meeting before I leave for Marcon in Columbus the Friday before Memorial Day. I got the list of Marcon panels I'm supposed to be on this evening.

Hmm. I do recall knowing some people in Columbus. Maybe we can get together this year.

  9. Molohan was instrumental in shaking out the Delay document loose of the Ethics Committee (with a bit of help from Chris/WVforDemocracy and puddle via this blog). Doesn't look like he was dumped for Blue Dogism so much as *lack* of Blue Dogism.

Oliverio, a conservative Democrat, had run an aggressive campaign, portraying Mollohan as corrupt and out of touch. Conservative media rallied around the 46-year-old financial adviser from Morgantown, as did anti-abortion groups angry over Mollohan's support of health care legislation.

The anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony List said it spent $78,000 on the 1st District race and made 80,000 prerecorded calls on Oliverio's behalf Monday and Tuesday. The results, it said, should serve as warning to other incumbents.
