I was moved to write the below after watching Deacon Fred make heavy weather of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on his Daily Godcast. His perplexity was puzzling and saddening, since it's not a difficult concept.
Our Lady, the Blessed Virgin Mary, was thrice loved from all eternity as the daughter of God the Father, the spouse of God the Holy Spirit and the mother of God the Son. As such, she was, alone among mortals born of women, conceived without sin. Her body could not be allowed to die and decay, and nor did her soul need the cleansing of Purgatory. Therefore, at the end of her earthly life she went to sleep, a state the Church terms her Dormition, using as is her wont a fancy, Latin-based word. As Our Lady lay in this sleeping state, she was "assumed" into Heaven, body and soul, by the power of God. There she lives, our mother who watches over us, having been crowned Queen of Heaven and Earth.
My "Is he dead yet?" hat came today. Now to see if I can wear it in public in a red state without getting beat up. Susan
ReplyDeleteHmmm... Not sure whether to say good luck or be careful. Probably both.
