U.S. President Calvin Coolidge delivers his first inaugural speech
my mother told of being excused from school to hear it. neighbors came over to hear it on the radio built by a young man on the same block, which radio had a speaker. Coolidge's accent was difficult for me to understand; do some folks in your neck of the woods still talk like that, listener?

    1. Alan, some Yankees, especially those in the northern states - Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont - have quite heavy accents. It can be heard in the southern states -Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island - too, but to a lesser degree. I've always liked the Yankee accent, and have long lamented its gradual demise; but then, I'm practically a native, having spent some forty-five of my sixty-two years in various parts of New England.

    2. Hmmm... Coolidge's accent is no thicker than FDR's. The recording isn't of the clearest, are you sure that's not your problem?

    4. Aw, I'm late to the party! HALLO ALAN!! 😊
Yes, Alan, some still talk this way, and I guess it must seem normal here because I had no difficulty understanding him. He drops his "r"s a lot, but that's a Bostonian and New England thing.
