  2. This is how Americans have to live.
Guardian: Katie Giede, a single mother and waitress in Conyers, Georgia, is one of the 42 million Americans who use the supplemental nutrition assistance program (Snap). Even with the maximum benefit permitted, she struggles to afford food for her and her child.

She makes $3 an hour plus tips at the fast-food chain Waffle House, where she has worked for 11 years. The company deducts meals from workers’ pay check per shift, regardless of whether they eat one or not.

Giede said she received $450 a month for her and her child. She said working too many hours or receiving too much income was a constant concern, due to eligibility cut-offs.

According to an analysis by the Urban Institute, at the end of 2024, even the maximum Snap benefit would not cover the cost of a modestly priced meal in 99% of all counties in the US ... -- nordy

  3. Trump redeploys nuclear submarines after ex-Russia leader’s menacing tweet
Guardian: Donald Trump has said that he has deployed nuclear-capable submarines to the “appropriate regions” in response to a threatening tweet by Russia’s former president Dmitry Medvedev, suggesting that he would be ready to launch a nuclear strike as tensions rise over the war in Ukraine.

In a post on Truth Social on Friday, Trump wrote that he had decided to reposition the nuclear submarines because of “highly provocative statements” by Medvedev, noting he was now the deputy chairman of Russia’s security council.
Medvedev had earlier said that Trump’s threats to sanction Russia and a recent ultimatum were “a threat and a step towards war”.

“I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that,” Trump responded. “Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances.” -- nordy

  4. Trump fires labor statistics chief after weaker than expected jobs report

Donald Trump has said he’s ordered the firing of Erika McEntarfer, the commissioner of the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, hours after data showed US employment growth was weaker than expected for the last few months.

In a Truth Social post, Trump suggested (with no evidence) McEntarfer had “faked” the employment figures in the run-up to last year’s election, in a bid to boost Kamala Harris’s chances of victory, and implied she “manipulated” the numbers for political reasons. -- nordy

    1. I hadn't seen this, though earlier I was reading an article that discussed the increasing unreliability of government-provided stats, economic stats among them.

We're not gonna make it another three-and-a-half years. IMO we'll be a Third World country by this time next year. That's what he wants. That's what he kept saying we already were all throughout the campaign. Accusation is projection, and he's bringing it to pass.

    2. And that isn't meant as comic relief. I'm utterly serious.

  5. Just saw that Ghislaine Maxwell has been transferred to a minimum security facility in Texas.
No doubt word of her pardon by Trump will be coming in due course.
