  1. The Worst Pediatric-Care Crisis in Decades [Click] Multiple respiratory viruses hitting all at once. [One of my father’s most vivid early childhood memories—he would have been at most three years old, so that would have been about 1914—was of being in a diphtheria ward. One child had had a tin whistle fitted into a tracheotomy; when the whistling stopped the nurses knew his breathing had as well and came running. Recovery from diphtheria supposedly confers lasting immunity, but my father had it twice.]

    1. Interestingly, the diphtheria toxin is a virus that infects the bacterium [corynebacterium diphtheriae] associated with the disease.

    2. We used to have multiple serious illnesses going around at the same time, without vaccines for them. It's how I got both Chicken Pox and Measles together as a 2 year old (and nearly died).

      Such good news!!

So, what happens now with the blood draw? Okay to skip it, or do they have to come back?

      And…OUCH! How are your arms?

    2. Legally I was qualified to do arterial draws, but I never had any practical experience. It used to be that the respiratory therapists (who DID have the practical experience) could always be counted on to help out in the hospital, but they dramatically miniaturized their blood collection equipment and couldn't collect enough for lab tests any more. Made it way less painful for the patients, though.

    2. I have noticed that they give a small victory just before they give a large defeat. My best guess here is that they're throwing Graham under the bus so they can feel free to save DT. This makes them look "fair." But they aren't.
