Harsh conditions mean Russian troops near Ukraine will need to be moved soon [Click] “Analysis: advance forces’ battle readiness will quickly degrade, giving Putin only days to choose invasion or retreat.” One would think that the Russians, of all people, would be ready to cope with General Winter—but maybe the Numerologist in Chief has not considered that. Logistics, cold, and mud doomed the German armies just as surely as did the population and industrial capacity of the USSR.
The other day it was 28 degrees above the Arctic Circle. An early spring seems to be upsetting plans. There is nothing to be lost by making impossible demands. Some Russians want to be GREAT.
There are major problems with the EPA: 1) It is homocentric in the sense that people being actively harmed define the standards; ecological deterioration does not count; 2) It is reactive, rather than preventive; 3) It does not cover underground so mining and oil/gas extraction are exempt even from public review; groundwater and surface water contamination are allowed; 4) Providing a general framework that states are to augment with specifics has not worked. 5) Nixon's intent, in retrospect was to protect industry from an intrusiv public by letting the EPA issue fig-leaf permits. The only "real" consequence was the DoD decision to abandon polluted bases to states so they did not have to clean up the mess. It was a response to FOIA befor most people even knew what FOIA was for. How did FOIA get passed? Nobody expected the public would want to read dull documents. Much as nobody expected that women were going to insist on financial equality.
We had 40's and 50's the last couple of days (even at night!) while Daughter and two little grands were in Vermont, and nearly all the snow on our big flower garden on the north side of the house melted away! They left early afternoon to return to Maine, and the temperatures began to drop and drop and a little snow moved in. We have half a chance of 6-12" of snow on Friday. It's just that time of year.

The Ukrainian interior ministry said in a statement that the Russian invasion has begun, the Wall Street Journal reports. Explosions were reported in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Kramatorsk and other parts of the country. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister said on Twitter that Putin had “started a full-scale war against Ukraine” and had begun shelling civilian cities. President Biden called Vladimir Putin’s move “an unprovoked, unjustified attack” in Ukraine, pledging further action against Russia.

ReplyDeleteSomewhat earlier, General Winter had similarly defeated Napolean's armies.
