  1. Major USPS Changes Could Hamper Vote-By-Mail At The Worst Possible Time [Click] Yep, this was predicted. We have been voting by mail for more than 25 years with no problem. Maybe this year we will deposit our ballots in a drop box. I inquired about a couple of packages that are taking a very long time to be delivered, and the postal clerk said that with everyone ordering online, it is currently three times worse than the busiest Christmas season he has ever seen—he has been working twelve hour days. And now the Trumpets want to forbid overtime right before the election.

    1. The drop box is only safe if it's monitored carefully, so that ballots are not stolen.

  2. 1334 known cases (+9)
    56 deaths (0 for a month)
    Now 157 active cases
    Recovered 1121
    In Hospital = 5 ( 0)
    Tests 88,246 (+8806!)

We are waiting on the results of major testing taking place around a suspected outbreak in the southern part of Vermont. I expect this number to jump by about 40-50 (or more) soon.

    1. In today’s news conference, we heard that the 49 positive antigen tests are being followed up with a proper PCR test. So far only 2 of those have tested positive. 15 negative. Tests ongoing. Stay tuned.

    2. Thanks, Alan.

I wonder if there's a typo in the Tests number. I suspect so. I imagine it's really 80,246, so a total of 1806. We'll see.

  3. The Atlantic: How Trump Closed Down the Schools [Click] “The president is demanding that classes resume this fall—but his own failures are forcing districts to shut their doors.” The Atlantic has strengthened its paywall. I may be able to work around it, but it’s long past time to consider subscribing. I’ve been mooching off them for a very long time, and they’re hard up.

  4. Some people give their life for the sake of others. We call them heroes. Here is a true hero. RBG is undergoing chemo again and plans to keep doing her job. Rock on, Justice Ginsburg!

Ruth Bader Ginsburg announces cancer recurrence, will remain on the Supreme Court

Hopefully after November RBG can finally freely retire if she wishes to or needs to.

    1. One story says 15 point margin. So that would be about 57 to 42. The in-person vote went to Bowman by 25 points, but Engel narrowed it up in the absentee votes.

    2. When The AP called the race, Bowman led Engel, 56 percent to 40 percent.”

“The U.S. Supreme Court put a clash over a grand jury subpoena for President Donald Trump’s financial records on a fast track, formally returning it to the appeals court level ahead of schedule,” Bloomberg reports.

  13. LBJ's advice to Humphrey for running mate. [Click] Yep, that sounds about right. We can only wonder if it would have made a difference, but Johnson was no slouch as a politician; he was an incredibly complex person.

    1. It is said that in his first run for office, not only did LBJ get enough votes from deceased constituents to win, they even voted in alphabetical order! If that doesn't show outstanding organizational ability on the part of the local Democratic establishment, I don't know what would.

    2. And years later LBJ would tell the story of the young boy who complained bitterly that his deceased father had come to town to vote for Johnson but hadn't stopped to visit hem!

  16. We watched the International Space Station fly over our house a few minutes ago. Now we’re taking a short drive to get a good vantage point to hopefully see Neowise Comet.

    1. We have seen the Space Station pass overhead; it's pretty easy to see if you know when and roughly where. Last night I made a slight effort to see the comet, not expecting to see it. The air was a little smokey; it appears less so this evening. I understood that it would be roughly where the sun set, visible about an hour thereafter.

      Delete
    2. No luck seeing the comet tonight; the air isn't clear enough to the north, probably because of a fire in the next county. At 9PM I couldn't see the pole star or the Big Dipper. Well, the air will probably clear in time to see it.

    2. When I saw this on Facebook a short while ago I read the age as 90. Realizing he was only 80 makes him seem almost young.

I've been getting scads of emails from the Lewis campaign for the past several weeks.
