  1. listener—re our introductory printing class:

The junior college was closed shortly before the city was locked down. The printing classrooms were locked with supplies, equipment and projects inside. (There was a period of a few hours given to retrieve our projects, but we missed the notice.) That came as the class was working on its screen printing project, and until the screens and partial prints can be retrieved, that is dead in the water. The next project was to be intaglio printing using copper plates, which requires good-sized presses. We got together online after a few days. Some people had the ability to do some sort of printing projects and were given free rein; those who didn't were assigned study of an intaglio artist selected from a web site, and are to make intaglio-like drawings. Naomi really wanted to learn screen printing, so we ordered what we needed and got things set up in the garage. She is also experimenting with linoleum block printing. I wanted to give white line (AKA Provincetown) prints a whirl [Wikipedia link here.], so ordered what I needed and am getting started on it. I want to give intaglio printing a try; it can be done on Plexiglass rather than copper--the plates are not as durable, but the printing doesn't require a press. Then, someday, when we can retrieve our stuff from the classroom, Naomi and I will complete our interrupted screen printing projects. Oh, and the instructor gave us that link I shared with you to a video about Trace Monotype printing [Click] which looks fascinating and can be done with very minimal equipment. I want to give that a try also. The instructor gives us the slide shows and instruction he normally would, and we will show our work to one another and discuss it. Ideal it is not, but arguably will satisfy the academic criteria for course credit. Not many people showed up for online class Tuesday; I should hope they wouldn't settle for an incomplete, but if so, so be it.

Oh, and today the local art supply store announced curbside pickup! They had been closed for two weeks.

  2. If your fear inspires you to do damage, you need to ask for help.

Inspired by a conspiracy theory, train engineer attempts to crash train into the hospital ship Mercy.

I mailed chocolates to you today. Wearing gloves, I Clorox-wiped the package before mailing. No note inside to limit exposure. The chocolates had already been here 11 days. Enjoy!!

  6. “The coronavirus outbreak is costing Trump Organization properties more than a million dollars in lost revenue daily and may have hurt the firm’s chances of earning a record price on the sale of its Washington hotel,” the Wall Street Journal reports. I don't care how many of his chickens didn't hatch.

  7. Those chocolates look delicious, but I really couldn't have done justice to them. Thanks for the picture, though.

Now I have to get up and move. I've been sitting in this chair for HOURS.

  9. Successful Art class by Zoom conference call just now. I am fairly well on my way on my current project, and will put together an order for the next project or two to send to the local art store.

  10. From the Holy Shit file:

You've heard that, like just about every other firm with sowing expertise, Christian Dior is making masks and gowns. Well, my sister has a friend who is a thirty-year-old nurse, a highly trained young woman with a doctorate and a very responsible job, in Atlanta.

Sis reported that last evening the friend had been complaining about the shortage of protective equipment. But then, in the next breath, she lamented that the Dior masks won't have the Dior label.

In telling me about it, Sis was spluttering, she was so angry. She couldn't believe her friend was so "vapid" (her word). She said she had to shut down the chat and just walk away. She couldn't cope. Not much leaves me speechless, but that did.

    1. Maybe the nurse just needed a perk? Maybe designer masks would boost morale a little?

(Of course, only if said masks were also N.95 compliant.)

    2. Oh, c'mon, Listener! Like Sis pointed out, adding labels would take up, that is waste, valuable time and resources. And what's she going to do with them, save them?

From remarks Sis has made and exchanges she has recounted over the past several months, I had already reluctantly come to the conclusion that the young woman is indeed vapid. Frankly, that conclusion does not give me much confidence in her competence as a nurse.

  11. From this morning's New York TimesFormer Vice President Joe Biden called for moving the Democratic National Convention to August, from mid-July. The Republican Party is still planning a convention in late August.

Bold and decisive, that's our Joe. :P
