Christmas Joy!

  1. Thanks for holding downtime fort yesterday, Alan! I honestly DO believe there is a spiraling civil war underway in evangelical Christian circles. It's time to separate the sheep from the goats.

    1. It was getting a little lonely here yesterday... I was looking at the photo of your Christmas tree, and thinking that if it had been any taller you would have been faced with the decision of whether to cut a hole in the ceiling or the floor. [grin]

    2. I always read your posts and certainly did yesterday. But I only post when I have something to say, and that's not every day.

    3. * down the fort

LOL, Alan! We are planning to lob off the top 4" of the top sprout so the Angel doesn't bump her head on the ceiling the next time she flies around. :-D

  2. Is everyone reading books and sipping hot chocolate and pretending they're Icelandic? If you don't know what I'm talking about, google "Jolabokaflod:"!

    1. Interesting to think that it is the result of war.

  3. Sanders California 2020 Campaign [Click] Way different from 2016; they learned lessons. WAY bigger organization, WAY more appearances than other campaigns—AND— would you believe fourteen thousand people at his Venice Beach rally the other day? Let’s see anybody beat that, eh?

    1. If you get locked out by the NYT paywall, keep trying alternative browsers. Try enough and one will work.

  4. Bernie Sanders and Rashida Tlaib: Trump's holiday menu: handouts for billionaires, hunger for the poor. [Click] “Republicans defend cuts to food stamps by saying that keeping people hungry will make them work harder. But we know this is just about cruelty.” I remember reading that the federal “welfare” program was originally called “the mothers’ pension.”

  5. Republicans attack the poor because they always punch down. They have never, and will never, attack anyone stronger or richer. They are sadistic cowards.

    1. They weren't always as the are now, Susan. But how they can deradicalize themselves I don't see. I sure hope the Dems can send them wandering in the wilderness for a good long time, and indeed to their party's extinction. But I am not convinced that the Democratic Party has spent enough time in the wilderness. I hope they have, but am not sure.

    2. I have the same doubts about the Democratic Party. They do not seem to have learned the lessons they should have learned from 2016.

    3. Agreed. There seem to be two wings of the Democratic Party, the Corporate aka Clinton Wing and (as a wise man once said) the Democratic Wing. I've yet to be convinced that the Democratic Wing is the stronger. If it proves not to be, Trump will win reelection.

    4. I agree completely Susan, both about Republicans in general and about the Democratic Party.

Just for a way to wrap our minds around the behaviour we see, here's a story:

As you may recall, Mizzen kitty was born sick 7 years ago. She was so congested that at 8 weeks she could not lower her head to eat from a bowl. So I had to feed her with a syringe. I had to get enough food in her that she could survive, because at 8 weeks she weighed only 12 ounces! It worked. She survived well, but ever since she has had a food fetish. I feed Mizzen and Spinnaker and invariably Mizzen will take about 8 bites of her own food then go in search of her sister's bowl, intimidate her sister until she gives it up and eats her sister's food first before her own. That is, unless I guard her sister and that bowl (which I do). Oddly, whenever I sit on the loveseat in the living room, she wants me to move over (onto the crack between the cushions) so she can have the prime location. She only wants that spot when I am sitting on it!

What I am seeing is that her gluttony is caused by fear of scarcity. She has an uncomfortable feeling about those situations and is aggressive enough to push in. I have to remind myself that her basic aggressiveness is a large part of why she survived at all.

But it also tells me that Republicans may well be the way they are out of a fear of scarcity in their early days. Given that Mizzen has all the food she needs, and she still responds this way, it seems clear that it isn't easily overcome.
