“Th’ newspapers have got to print what happens,” said Mr. Hennessy.

“No,” said Mr. Dooley, “they’ve got to print what’s diff’rent. Whiniver they begin to put headlines on happiness, contint, varchoo, an’ charity, I’ll know things is goin’ as wrong with this counthry as I think they ar-re ivry naytional campaign.”

David Frum: The Wisest Remedy Is Not Impeachment [during this Congress] [Click] “If the Democrats move ahead at this juncture, it will backfire on them.” A very good argument IMO, well put.

A Stain on the Honor of the Navy [Click] “In acceding to a White House request to cover the name of the USS John S. McCain, officers and officials revealed a rot within the service.” Exactly what I thought when I heard the news.

Microbiome news: Autism symptoms replicated in mice after faecal transplants Title [Click] “Study aims to discover whether gut microbes play a part in development of the condition”

Modern examples of mishearings evolving into common or accepted English [Click] Not different from “chickenpox” or “Ethelred the Unready,” to choose but two old examples.

    1. Frum presents my ideas very clearly and cogently. He says it better than I could. i especially appreciate what he says about this approach allowing Democratic candidates to focus on important issues rather than getting entangled with the minutiae of Trump wrongdoing.

    1. Saw it. I think one point to colonoscopies is that they let your see and remove polyps while they are still benign. But I'm not clear how important that really is.

    2. That's what I figure too. I raised the question of how long colonoscopies should continue with my old oncologist. Reasonably enough, he said it depended on the condition of the individual colon; with some people it can become risky sooner, with others later. I gathered that it wasn't uncommon to continue them until age 80, or even past then.

  3. Ohio is propping up nuclear plants and dismissing wind and solar power because they believe that will help trump get re-elected. I'm always surprised that a state with 50 universities, colleges and tech schools has so many BLASTED IDIOTS in it! Part of the problem is that pallid worm Mike DeWine who is all-in for trump and just as repressive as any Republican who ever rolled down the pike. Oh, and *we* get to pay extra on our energy bills to fund this joke. I really, really, really hate Republicans.

    1. It's bad enough what has become of the Democratic Party, but the decay of the Republican Party is in another class altogether. IMO.

    2. I don't know what Ohio is doing, but propping up nuclear plants is hardly incompatible with encouraging wind and solar power. And I don't see what either has to do with re-electing Trump.

    3. They're Republicans, Bill. You can't expect coherent thought from them.

    1. The National Popular Vote Compact isn't even being mentioned in Illinois. I wouldn't know about it if I didn't see it mentioned here. I guess Illinois currently has too many other things on its agenda -- a graduated income tax, recreational marijuana, expanded abortion rights, etc.

  6. President Trump said that he planned to impose a 5% tariff on all imported goods from Mexico beginning June 10, a tax that he said would “gradually increase” until Mexico stopped the flow of undocumented immigrants across the border, the New York Times reports.

Well, howzabout Mexico puts an import tax on corn from the United States and gradually increases it until the flood of firearms from the US into Mexico is halted?

  7. Brexit upends political party support in UK. [Click] It is very roughly a four-way split among Lib Dems, Brexit Party, Tories and Labour, with Greens up significantly.
