Perfect day to choose a Christmas Tree

  1. The Corruption of the Republican Party [Click] “The corruption I mean has less to do with individual perfidy than institutional depravity.” [Emphasis added.] A nice turn of phrase. The column calls to my mind Huey Long [Click], who aggressively sought political power in order to do considerable good, but then seemed to get carried away with the pursuit of power for its own sake and was decisively removed from power by an unsuspected person. That the Republican Party could suddenly be reduced to political irrelevance by something no one sees coming certainly seems plausible. As for what happens thereafter, my crystal ball is filled with dense fog.

  2. Getting up for that 8:40 doctor appointment wasn't as bad as I'd feared because I got to bed and to sleep hours early last night. Blood pressure satisfactory as usual. Dr. Yen said healing of the muscle strain following the spasm when I twisted my neck wrong several months ago was just a matter of time, although he gave me some neck exercises that might help a bit. It has seemed to be a bit better the last few days. He also ordered a few blood tests to make sure the my need for extra sleep is just a matter of advancing age, as we both suspect. And I found out why my patient profile lists "hypercholesterolemia," although my cholesterol levels are fine: My "good" cholesterol is lower than desirable, but there is no code for that. That's no longer a concern, however, when someone is in their 80s with no sign of cardiovascular problems.

  3. New York Times Opinion:
The Robots Have Descended on Trump Country
They are leaving many ‘casualties of history’ in their wake.

No link because it is a distressing essay.
