  1. Bright blue day and very cold. More to come.

  2. Here it seems to have rained a bit during the night; mMorning fog, overcast later in the day with the sun occasionally peeking through. Chilly, but no frost. This used to be typical winter weather around here.

    1. Overcast mostly gone by twilight, brighter stars now (6:45 PM) now visible, so I expect fog in the morning and above-freezing temperatures.

  3. So the ATT internet technician was here. Replaced the modem's power cord, which has been intermittently disconnecting itself for years. The modem itself, although obsolete, tentatively appears to be OK. But if it ever needs to be replaced we'll need to have an entirely new cable run into the house because that's what modern modems require.

    1. Pardon my suspicious nature, Bil, but I remember when our Earthlink modem (a cheap off-brand) was intermittently on the fritz. Earthlink wanted an unreasonable amount of money (I forget if it was up front or in the form of an extended contract), so I just bought and installed a Netgear modem, which has been fine. Come to think of it, there was also the time the garage door sensor wasn't working well, and the original installer's rep said we had to replace the motor and everything but the door. I found a universal sensor on Amazon for a reasonable price, installed it, and all has been well. Later got a spare for the other door when its time comes. I suspect the installer could be trying to take you for a ride.

    2. Nope. First, I probably should clarify that this "modem" -- I believe "gateway" is the more correct term -- handles all fiber optic services: TV as well as internet. AFAIK you can't get it anywhere else. But the point is that it's not anything we buy: AT&T provides as part of the service we get for our monthly fee. Any new one would likewise be free and I *think* the installation would be too.

    3. Ah, a different beast; we don't have fiber optic cable here.

  5. We got 4" of new snow overnight on top of the couple of inches we got very slowly over the past few days. Got plowed out ahead of tonight's deep freeze. Overnight lows around 4F or even 0F tonight.

  6. Posted this on facebook:

Seventy-seven years ago, the Japanese changed my life forever. At a bit over a year, I and my mother, and a year later, my brother became War Nomads. We moved all over the west--anywhere Daddy might be sent home on home leave. Three years later, we spent nearly a year in Oklahoma City. (He'd gotten a Christmas furlough, and with the war winding down in the Pacific, they sent him to Fort Sill rather than back to the war zone.) And yes, I'm eternally grateful he came home. So many fathers did not. One of my favorite pastimes for the rest of his life was trying to wheedle a smile from him. He was a globally loving human, but not a merry one.

    1. I love that you made a point of wheedling smiles from him. I'll bet he loved it (loved you!) too.
