That's an excellent suggestion, Alan. Sez the former Betty Crocker Future Homemaker of America for her highschool. As I recall they offered the test to anyone. Covered three classes I was bored out of my mind with, so I took it. Astonished that I won, lol! Didn't make state though.

listener: My advanced scientifical estimate of number of cups of coffee a jar (100g) of Mount Hagen instant will make (my cup of coffee is a small mug, about 300-325 ml, not a teacup): Well rounded teaspoons (might be a bit on the strong side): 55 cups Level teaspoons (kinda weak-kneed coffee): 79 cups. So your slightly rounded teaspoons ought to come out about 60-65 cups, all right. Equals about 12 to 18 cents per cup depending on purchase price. That's two cents in 1965 money, when a regular cup of coffee cost 10 cents at a restaurant, as memory serves me. I remember occasional signs advertising coffee at five cents a cup. Near as I can figure, food costs about a third of what it did when I was a kid, adjusted for inflation.

What if they changed the name of the course from "Home Economics" or "Domestic Science" to something like "Independent Living Skills?"

Yes, they should. Kids should be taught how to make out a check, how to cook simple foods, how to mend clothes, budget skills, etc.
Delete"A Man, a Can, a Plan" should be a dandy up-to-date cookbook for the course, no? And how to handle credit cards is now a very important skill.
