Retreat: Bird on the Chapel

  1. Excuse me, but I'm attempting to maintain my sanity through this rough patch by sharing jokes.

A guy takes his boy tiger hunting. They're creeping through the weeds and the man says, "Son, this hunt marks your passage into manhood. Do you have any questions?" And the boy says,"Yes, if the tiger kills you how do I get home?"

    Some snippits:

Democrats in the legislative branch of government have been mocking Trump, from the proposed Covfefe Act (it’s an acronym for Communications Over Various Feeds Electronically For Engagement, but also a joke about a peculiar tweet of Trump’s including that word, or nonword) that would ban him from deleting tweets on the grounds that they’re presidential records…”

…Even Smirmoff Vodka got a dig in with an ad that said “we’d be happy to talk about our ties to Russia under oath.”

In Southern California, a Latino-Muslim alliance started a project called Taco Trucks at Every Mosque, timed to coincide with the holy month of Ramadan.

Greenpeace USA executive director Annie Leonard told me that they don’t have to try to recruit or inform people anymore, that they can’t “answer the phones fast enough”; that people are showing up ready to try to change the world. She said everything groups like hers have been doing for decades “was all practice for this moment”.

Hot today—-107 deg. F—Oops, make that 108.7 a few minutes ago, with rather high humidity (28%). Oops again—the official high temperature was 112! The next couple of days expected to be merely 110. The NWS has issued official flooding and heat warnings. I saw big clouds over the mountains, but no classical thunderheads. It took me a lot longer to get a sprinkler control valve fixed than I anticipated, and even though I was mostly working in the shade with a nice breeze off the river, I got a little goofy from the heat. (I ran into an unanticipated problem with the sizes of the pipes, and the frosting on the cake was when I glued the control valve in place backwards. Fortunately I had made allowance for that and certain other possible problems). Judicious applications of water, salt pills and air conditioning have reduced my goofiness to a more or less normal level.

    1. Scary on the heat and the goofy, but everything you posted prior to that looks very good to me!

    2. I must say I particularly enjoyed the Smirnoff bit...

And here is something else dead level interesting:

Over time, leaders lose mental capacities—most notably for reading other people—that were essential to their rise.

P.S.: This is typically the hottest time of year hereabouts. And I hear 120 degrees is predicted for Phoenix. That said, we seem to be looking at a hot spell, a week or ten days over 100 degrees. That gets to be a drag.

  4. Just checking in to let everyone know I'm OK. After five days with temps in the 90s or high 80s (with fairly high humidity and thunder storms), it's now comfortably in the 70s.
