The day it all began…

I took this photo at the Bernie rally in Burlington when Bernie announced his candidacy,
13 months ago today.

  1. The first day of the firstliest candidacy!

‘Brexit’ Revolt Casts a Shadow Over Hillary Clinton’s Cautious Path [Click] "For Hillary Clinton, Britain’s emotionally charged uprising against the European Union is the sort of populist victory over establishment politics that she fears in the coming presidential election." This from the NY Times.

Two things about the article really strike me; first, her adoption of the ill-omened "StrongerTogether" slogan of the UK Labour and Conservative parties' joint campaigns against Scots independence and for remaining in the EU. The fact that her allies on the Democratic Party Platform Committee have slapped Bernie's supporters in the face shows that her idea of "together" means blind obedience to She Who Must Be Obeyed. [My apologies to H. Rider Haggard; which reminds met that I have never read his "She" or seen the movie, although I have from time to time thought of doing so. Here (Click) is the link to the Project Gutenberg copy.]

The second is the alleged leak that brings up memories of her 2008 campaign's denouement--a sign that the rats, if not yet leaving the ship, are at least starting to peek out the hawse hole:

"According to their friends and advisers, Mrs. Clinton and former President Bill Clinton have worried for months that she was out of sync with the mood of the electorate, and that her politically safe messages — like 'I’m a progressive who gets results' — were far less compelling to frustrated voters than the “political revolution” of Senator Bernie Sanders or Mr. Trump’s grievance-driven promise to 'Make America Great Again.''

  2. Cat--I was reading up last night on the issue of Holyrood having to agree with Westminster about changes flowing from Brexit, and I found a lot of commentary about the legal ramifications of the UK leaving the EU. Basically, after so many decades of cooperation UK and EU laws and regulations have become so extensively intertwined that untangling them (in a way that actually works) will be a brobdinagian task--quite possibly more than Whitehall (let alone the UK Parliament) can handle (at least with its current staff). Hoo Boy....

    1. I hadn't realized that Haggard's "She" was the first in a four-volume
      series. [Click]

    2. I also hadn't realized that there was a 1935 movie version (since restored in color) and a 1965 version with Ursula Andress. I found those while looking on YouTube (which now carries audio books) for the silent movie version (1911? I'm not sure).

    3. Wow--Wikipedia informs me that there were movie versions of "She" in 1911, 1916, 1917, 1925, 1935, 1965 and 2001!

      --Alan

The 1965 film, She, was produced by Hammer Film Productions...

    4. Here [Click] is the 1925 movie version of "She" at full length online, with intertitles written by H. Rider Haggard

The 1911 version was a short, the 1917 version is lost except for one publicity frame.

    5. Wow, Alan! I've read She and knew there were further volumes, but haven't read those. No idear about the film history. Fascinating. And Haggard himself worked on one of them? Again, wow!

    6. Like the Allan Quatermain books better, though I've only been able to find two of them in accessible format. Perhaps it's time to make another search.

    7. Check YouTube. Now that they have gobbled up Audible, they have a lot of audiobooks, integrated with all their other offerings. Of course Haggard's books are very dated in terms of society (which is probably what has put me off them a bit), but they are unquestionably very significant in the development of several genres of fiction. And they are on the lighter end of Victorian fiction too. I should expand my literary background. (I think I saw a movie version of "King Solomon's Mines" when I was a kid.)

  3. Has anybody heard from puddle? She lives in W.VA which is being hammered by incredible floods, *and* she lives near a creek. Worrying about her.

    1. puddle lives far enough uphill from the creek I don't think there is much reason for concern about her personal safety. Her ability to get on-line or into town is a different matter.

    2. She checked in a couple days ago, but she hasn't been her since.

    3. People have a strong tendency to build in flat places, notably including the floodplains of watercourses. Reading about the WVA floods, I suspect that explains a lot. Way back when I subscribed to the West Virginia Hillbilly, a great newspaper with a national following at the time. The editor published a "West Virginia Heritage" series of books, contributing them for free to schools and libraries in the state. I remember one about a family that gets flood out several times, retreating farther uphill and building stronger each time, becoming paranoid about the river. The reporters covering the floods still ring true.

  4. Doesn't look like I remembered to post this: There has been some talk about recurring contributions to the Bernie campaign. A couple of days ago I got an email from Bernie reminding us that we could cancel our contributions if we so desired. Otherwise they would continue. I let mine continue, of course.

    1. A bit fuzzy on it, but I think t hey automatically continue through November.

    2. I must investigate, my donations to Bernie particularly, but for Bernie and his endorsees I was probably a little more generous than I should have been in May (reasonable considering the primary election dates), and did quite respectably in June. I will hold off a bit--I have some accounts receivable (one from an unpleasant public defender who may be trying to stiff me, although I hope it is just bureaucratic delay). Certainly Tim Canova will be high up the list, and his election vs DWS comes in August as memory serves me. I don't think I have any recurring contributions--my consulting income is irregular, and I don't pay for such things out of our household accounts.

    3. Cat ~~ Unless we ourselves cancel our recurring contributions, they continue as long as Bernie's campaign does. Whether that's November or sooner. I had a recurring contribution to Nancy Rottering, who lost in the March primary, and my contribution automatically ended at that time.

  5. The doves nesting on the nesting site I built under the eaves on the north side of our house have two little ones! I am trying to get a photo of the family without getting so close that I frighten them. Not sure how successful I will be with our camera.

  6. Glad to be safe. One county west and one county down was hit terrifically hard. Glad this was a miss. Greenbiar got 10"--during Hurricane Isobel in 2003, we got 12", and the flood reached the second of six steps to my living level. However, I did spend the night in my car with a dog and two cats, just uproad a bit. Watching the rising water.

    Today bright and moderate temps.

  9. Hallo from gorgeous Camden, Maine!

Just wanted to post a little HOPE:

The DNC has eliminated most of Bernie's platform. But! Some folks had foresight and have him either on the ballot anyway or as a registered write in candidate covering ALL 50 STATES!

    1. Good heavens--is that actually possible? Will have to read and evaluate. If true, it is time for HRC to start sweating seriously.

    2. There;s a contradiction. They say they got their last confirmation this past February. But in Illinois you can't even start collecting signatures for an independent or "new party" candidate until March. Unless, of course, they were talking about the petitions to get him on the Democratic primary ballot.

  10. Looks fishy to me, listener. I don't find any confirmation.
