    Clinton Opposes Pacific Trade Deal

    October 7, 2015By Taegan Goddard

In a major break with President Obama and her own past statements, Hillary Clinton told the PBS NewsHour that she doesn’t support the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact.

Said Clinton: “What I know about it, as of today, I am not in favor of what I have learned about it.”

Though she helped negotiate the treaty, Clinton now says she isn’t convinced the deal would produce new jobs, raise wages and protect national security.

Jonathan Chait: “Is anybody going to believe that she will actually oppose the treaty as president? Sure, she might slightly mollify some supporters in labor, who would like cover to support her candidacy even though they disagree on the agreement. But she will also do more damage to her overall credibility and reputation for conviction — which happens to be the biggest single problem she faces right now.”

Now, a couple of things strike me about Ms Clinton's statement, as quoted. First of all, it is not standard English--it is garbled. Why? Surely as a native English speaker, a graduate of an elite private college and the Yale law school, she should know how to speak coherent English. Incoherent speech can be evidence of an incoherent mind--that's a possibility. Or perhaps she thinks she can communicate better with the commoners if she doesn't use proper English? Or is it because she is being less than honest? Certainly those are weasel words [my sincere apologies to our furry brethren]; has she lived in a bubble so long that she thinks common people can't recognize them as such? Or was she speaking as advised by some dope on her staff, but fearful that the hoi polloi might actually be able to detect dishonesty? (Or at least be tipped off to it by a reporter.) It makes me think of that obvious whopper she told about landing under fire in Bosnia. She would be better advised, methinks, to OWN the TPP; people will respect honesty and consistency. I think this was a terrible mistake.

    1. A mistake to our favour as more people shake their heads, I hope. Downright dumb of her to do this the week before the first debate.

  2. I had a dream last night that I was living on the third floor of an apartment house and, when I looked out the window one day, there was a long white and blue sign which read, "How have you seen Howard Dean today?" And there, through the window across the way was none other than Howard Dean, sporting a big grin. LOL!

  3. Sounds like you got it bad, listener! [grin]

Sen. Bernie Sanders “is uninterested in going through the motions of typical debate practice,” Politico reports.

“While CNN is billing the event as a showdown, Sanders’ team sees the first Democratic debate as a chance to introduce a fairly niche candidate to a national audience. So his team intends to let him do what he’s been doing. Far from preparing lines to deploy against Clinton — let alone O’Malley, Lincoln Chafee, or Jim Webb — Sanders plans to dish policy details, learned through a handful of briefings with experts brought in by his campaign.”

I don't recall that I have ever watched a TV presidential "debate," but this sounds promising!

Oh, and did you see that McCarthy dropped out of the Speaker contest? Anarchy is inevitably an unsuccessful method of political action.

    1. Alan: Please remember that I am an anarchist! ;-) Volunteer teamwork, not top-down dictation is the key.

Not that the Tea Party understands the concept of teamwork.

    2. Ah, Alan, I have never been a "Crushie", if that's what you meant … as puddle is my witness.

McCarthy dropping out at the last second is amazing … more proof that the Republicans are in terrible disarray.

  4. Just want to say that while I've been pretty quiet recently, am loving this conversation. Don't stop.

  5. Anarchosydicalism and workers' soviets have no small attraction for me; sometimes such organizations can be long-lived [e.g. the Berkeley Student (housing) Cooperative, founded in 1932 and still going strong]. Prince Kropotkin's anarchism is really rather romantic; but these Tea Party radicals are engaging in activities not far distant from the "propaganda of the deed." Well, to tell the truth I think the "Republican Party" is getting what it richly deserves; but I am a trifle anxious about how it will shake out. BTW, Charlie Rangel tweeted photos of himself making a smoothie and sitting back to enjoy the show; I'm more of a popcorn man myself, but one shouldn't overdo the dietary fiber.
