Daughter got into SMITH!?!! That's AWESOME!!! How did I miss that fact?
Sweet Congratulations!!
My S-I-L graduated from Smith. Great place. I've been there, Mah*Sweetie and I even camped overnight in her dorm room quite against regs. Ha! Anne Morrow Lindberg's alma mater!
You've got to be kidding, Renee! Springfield is about a half an hour's easy drive from Northampton! You're not allergic to cats, are you? No, wait Mum doesn't like us having our friends in the house. There's a Friendly's )(ice cream cum burger place) right around the corner from my house. I *hope* we can work it out to be able to see each other for a while! E-mail me (cosmoscat(at)earthlink(dot)net). I'm so excited at the thought of being able to see you! Will Demetrius be with you, or will you be alone? This is great!!!
BTW if memory serves, Julia Child also went to Smith (though my memory isn't what it used to be).
Wow! Smith seems, and is, very far away from here; but it must still be a pretty long trip from Ohio, over mountains and all that. Among other things it is a human size, which is important. Three cheers for the traditional American liberal arts education!
Got back home yesterday evening, safe, sound, and tired. Jet-lagged today. Up at 6 a.m., then a 5-hour nap in the afternoon. We'll see how tomorrow goes.
On this trip I became aware that neither my vision nor my stamina are what they were when I went to Australia in 2010. But I'm still very glad I got to see all the places I did.
Got a chance to catch up on earlier posts the last day of the trip. Glad to here that things are looking food for Susan.
Today I worked at the polls during Vermont's Primary election. We had a very low voter turnout, as there were few contested races and people were focused on tomorrow being the first day of school. We'll have the usual good turnout come November. :-)
Off to Sandy Eggo Wednesday evening for court Thursday morning--an alleged THC DUI with reasonable doubt IMO, and nobody hurt. Carry-on bag packed (I normally have it ready or nearly so) and brief case contents thinned out to reduce its weight. Shoes shined. Tie and sweater vest packed--I go for the slightly rumpled professorial look, not the power suit look. I think it helps to gain the empathy of the jury--as does a bit of humor as opportunity presents.
Now if I can only maintain my affected hybrid of Inland North and West of England speech…but there may not be much opportunity to toss out the distinctive words. I THINK I have undone the Mary-marry-merry merger and the route-root (noun)-root (verb) merger, and my native speech does not include the pin-pen or cot-caught merger. Clear enunciation, use of the subjunctive case and proper use of "shall" and "will" were drummed into me fairly well in grammar school. And despite what the linguistic maps say, we called sweetened carbonated drinks "pop" when I was a kid, not "soda."
Getting ready to take Daughter to Smith College in Massachusetts. I has a sad.

ReplyDeletePosted last night from my phone...or, at least, I thought I did. But there's nothing form me on yesterday's thread.
