Heavy Snow

  1. Snow or not, Dean is hot!

Good day in San Diego Wednesday; the taxi cost an awful lot ($50) to get to the hotel near the courthouse, but time was an issue late at night and I didn't care to walk through an unfamiliar city in the dark. Nicely refurbished little old hotel about five minutes' walk from the courthouse. Nice weather, a bit warmer than Fresno. Court was quick--I was the first witness and the only, and was off the stand in about an hour. Since time was not a factor, I made it back to the airport for $1.25 using the trolley, a free hotel shuttle, and a bit of shoe leather. Even if the county is paying, $50 is a bit steep. The public defender said the jury liked me; apparently they found me credible, because they came in with a not guilty verdict. Satisfied customers, that's what we like. As long as we don't have to bend the truth. There was a storm coming in when I got back to Fresno about 10:30 PM; a cold (by our standards) wind, and by the time I was halfway across town it was raining. There must have been snow in the mountains. And the bathroom scale had nicer things to say for me Thursday morning than for quite some time; it's a start.

Bill--Re using the IRA to purchase an annuity--the distribution from the IRA is still taxable as income, isn't it? Or not?

    puddle--happy knees! Pronto!

listener--when my mother was young she had difficulties with cows' milk, but goats' milk was OK.

P.S.: While in San Diego I almost completely read William Morris's "The Wood Beyond the World" (1913). Pleasant, but I think not as interesting his "The Well at the World's End."

    1. Alan ~~ Assuming we're talking about a traditional IRA, in which the money is contributed before taxes, then the income from the annuity is fully taxable.

    2. First posted this today at 8:42am on my iPhone. Just now I found enough typos in it that I decided to delete that one and repost:

Awesome job, Alan! A grateful populace thanks you for keeping the courts a little more honest!

Your Mom was lucky. I read that many people who have a cow's milk allergy cannot also drink goat's milk. I guess we'll see!

    3. That all sounds very good, Alan! We definitely like satisfied customers...and unbent truth. 8)

    4. Alan ~~ Just realized I may not have answered the question you meant to ask. The money from the IRA is NOT taxable as a lump sum. It is the income from the annuity that is taxable.

    1. Interesting. I just checked: He'll be 67 on election day in 2016. That's not too old -- 5 years younger than McCain was when he ran. And when Howard completed 8 years in office he would still be a few months younger than I am now.

    2. Thanks Bill...good sleuthing!

    3. Oh, eight years of Howard! The country and the world would be a better place for that! Hoping and wishing and praying with all my might and maign!

  3. Knees have improved from *ICKY* to *tricky* . . . . They don't hurt, really, and as long as I move very carefully, fully aware of the mechanics of a step, and make certain that all weight on the left knee is directly down (and in no way, to no degree lateral), I am doing fine. It's just that the "process" is slow. Very slow. So I have become slow, too.

    1. I'm afraid we all become slower as we get older. Although with any luck you won't have to be so *very* slow a few days from now.

    2. So glad you're on the mend, Puddle. Every little bit helps.

  4. Who wants to help the Disability Pride Parade? I mean the one that takes place in Chicago every year and of which I am treasurer.

The secret is to use GoodSearch as your on-line search engine. You can get the app at GoodSearch.com and select "Disability Pride Parade" as the organization you want to support. The parade then gets 1 cent for every search you do.

Of course, we wouldn't mind if you went to disabilityprideparade.org and made a direct contribution. But this way you don't have to dig into your own pockets.

    1. The problem with using Good Search is remembering to do so. But I'll do my best.

    2. OK, I've made it my homepage instead of Google.

    3. Bill, I have replaced Google with GoodSearch on my main page. The first search I did was "Howard Dean." The top entry read: "We found Howard Dean!" LOL! I've already made you 10 cents! :-)

I tried to get the GoodSearch app for my iPhone, but got a message saying it isn't yet available in the United States.
