Renee--It IS NOT easy to obtain minimal nutrition on a vegetarian diet; possible, yes. Easy, no. I've been there. "Diet For a Small Planet" remains a very good resource. Women of reproductive age are in a state of marginal iron balance under the best of circumstances, and one needs either vitamin pills or some sort of non-vegetarian food to get enough vitamin B12. (Or tempeh, which is essentially bacterial, like vitamin pill B12, and is hard to come by. Almost any amount of milk or eggs will do the trick--we typically have about a *five-year* supply of B12 in our bodies.) But I'm preaching to the choir, no?
I think it's much harder on a vegan diet, though Kimmy Cash Fairbaugh knows how and is doing great with it. I was a lacto-ovo-vegetarian who also occasionally ate fish. Now I sometimes allow local, humanely raised meats. Tempeh is easy to find at health food stores. And B12 is easy to take as a supplement. That's just part of knowing what works.
I've been thinking about what I've heard here recently regarding Republican attitudes and right-wing dominance. And about Rachel Meadows being our only hope. It occurs to me that a big part of the reason I don't share these views is that I don't watch TV. The talking heads on TV -- and the voices on talk radio -- are as much entertainers as anything else. And they largely entertain by being provocative. If you read the newspapers or their on-line equivalents you get the views of Republicans who are seriously engaged in the process of getting elected. Yes, you can find idiots like Akin. But for the most part you have reasonable differences of opinion. And people who can change their opinions when they see those opinions won't fly with the American people.
Political TV is sort of terra incognita to me too, Bill. Looks like infotainment. After all, the information content of TV news, even the best done and intentioned, is necessarily very low compared to anything written, either newspaper or digital press.
Oh, and it seems our area of central California has displaced Orange County as the most reliable GOP-voting area in the state. For Orange County to lose its pole (poll?) position seems remarkable indeed; it was long iconic.
Didn't mention last night that there was one distinctly upbeat aspect to the convention. I'm trying to organize Traincon! -- A group of fans taking the train from Chicago to San Antonio for next year's Worldcon. Got a lot of buzz and one actual sign-up already. (Need 20 for Amtrak to consider it an official group.)
Too bad Cat's muggles can't be persuaded they need to see the Alamo once in their lifetimes.
Thanks for the suggesstions, listener and Alan. I copied and pasted listener's comments and sent them to Demetrius. Sadly, I have very little influence over my daughter, so in order to accomplish ANYTHING, I really need to get her daddy on board.
Beautiful weather here today; the air a bit cool, but no breeze and sunny all day. We got quite a bit of yard work done yesterday and today. I got a start on pruning fruit trees yesterday, and roses today.
