What truly amazes me is the people who go all out for Thanksgiving...lots of baking, company staying over, parade, big meal, football game...then off to the Black Friday sales! Do they sleep at all?
And none of it has anything to do with Pilgrims or Native or gratitude.
My sister's one of those. But she's both high energy, AND an extrovert. She hosted 10, then went to a movie with her youngest, and then headed over to best buy. At about three hundred in line, and four hundred more showed up behind her. She said getting in/out was minutes. They gave up at Kohl's, where the checkout lines were about five hours. And then she came home and blogged about it at four a.m.
Somewhat shook up. As Listener may have heard, there was a natural gas explosion in downtown Springfield this evening around 5:30. Last I heard, two buildings were confirmed destroyed. Several people had been taken to hospital, but the extent of injuries was unknown. I'll go check Channel 22 in a moment.
Mum and I felt a jolt and were puzzled and disquieted, but Dad and Sis felt nothing. We thought it was another small earthquake. When we sat down to supper Dad turned on the TV saying there might be a report on the earthquake Mum and I felt - and it was a live report from the scene from a pretty scared reporter who had been on the scene when the explosion happened. That sobered him - he hadn't quite believed me. Anyway, we're OK but I for one am still very unsettled.
In other news, Emma and Esme were brought home today. They are in nice cedarwood boxes. Sis is going to keep Emma on her mantle and Dad put Esme in the niche above the back parlor fireplace. This seems to have eased their minds somewhat. I personally find it just a little creepy but entirely understand why they don't want to bury the kitties now. Dad said it will be easier to do that later, but it's better this way for now.
I haven't been feeling well, but have been doing a good deal of reading. Finished Under the Dome. An excellent novel, if very intense, and definitely not for the fainthearted. Going to find something light and fluffy to read next.
The news conference was supposed to start at 8:00 but it hasn't, and I'm listening to the perfect piano of Teddy Wilson. Much as I want to hear the news conference, I'd much rather listen to the music.
Cat ~~ Yes, it would be upsetting to have it so close. You always wonder what could have been done to prevent it.
And it's good that people feel better with the kitties home.
Haven't been doing much reading lately, but have started on Orson Scott Card's Pathfinder, which my book discussion group will be doing in a couple of weeks. First couple of chapters are weird, but we'll see.
Glad the pussems are home. I think it does help some to live with the ashes a bit -- closure of a kind. Rudi was on Edwin's altar till I brought them both home. And then it took six or eight months to let go enough to put them in the ground.
BTW the news conference came on about twenty past eight Sounds like everything is very well organized. The Lt. Gov. happened to be in town today, so he spoke as well as the mayor and other city and state officials and a prep. of the gas company. I was impressed by how quickly and efficiently the emergency response was organized. There's a shelter at Central High School and everyone has specific and logical plans for what their department (and the gas company) will be doing over the next several days. It was most reassuring. I felt much calmer after listening to the news conference.
Howard is first on a Friday that is not black, but gray with flurries of snow. The day after the third-warmest Thanksgiving in Chicago history.
ReplyDeleteHoward's da boy!!
ReplyDeleteNever have understood this day, lol! Anyone thinking those $800 high def TVs are *gifts* for someone? Or just more me me me?

ReplyDeleteHoly shit! Does she bottle her energy and sell it? If so, I'm buying!
DeleteThe only thing I *might* stand in line for is free stuffed peacocks. And that's only maybe.
ReplyDeleteHi guys.

Channel 22, our NBC affiliate, is currently reporting sixteen hurt, including a Springfield police officer.
DeleteNow they're saying two firefighters are among the injured as well.

Yikes, Cat! That IS scary.

I knew you'd understand, Puddle.
DeleteSis definitely feels better having Emma home. She said so again just now. And I think it's good for Dad too.
