How are you preparing to give Thanks?

  1. I'm thankful for Howard Dean.

Today I got a haircut, finished the shopping, just made it to work, came home afterwards and have been cleaning the kitchen cupboards and drawers ever since. Almost done. Then I shall flop into bed and get up tomorrow to clean all the rest of the house, then hopefully have time (and power) enough to make a pie. I really want to make a pie. Several people are bringing pies, so, strictly speaking, I don't have to make one. But I only make one or two a year and I want to make one with organic cherries. Mmmm. What would you think of a pie made of both sweet dark cherries and Empire apples? Would that taste well, do you think? Anyone ever had such a pie?

Okay, back for one last push to finish the kitchen, then to bed!

    BTW, it's already snowing here.

  2. Never had such a pie, but it sounds delicious! It ought to look dandy too. We expect a report. Not familiar with Empire apples, but I suppose they are probably on the firm and tart side.

  3. Empire apples taste crisp and the perfect mix of sweet and tart. They make the most wonderful pies ever. The trick is to get them in the Fall while they're still crisp, because after awhile they go mushy. They were named for The Empire State (New York) where they originated.

I've decided to use a cupcake pan and make little bitty pies as appetisers. Some will be cherry and apple and some will be apple and cheese.

And now that my Kitchen is super clean (except some of the countertops and the floor...that's tomorrow....I must get myself to sleep! Big day tomorrow, but all the fun begins! I'll put on some George Winston music and clean to my heart's content. Then I'll make the ap-pie-tisers (yes, I made up that word) and enjoy myself hugely.

Have fun making merry! And remember to be thankful.

Now I wonder how Thankful is. :-)

  4. Thankful is very busy! Her MIL is staying with them, she's got the main (shared with her sister) care of a failing aunt, her hubby's family is coming in for T'giving, which she had last night. . . .

Our rain's over, leaving a washed world, and warm. Going to get colder all day, and windy. No predicting weather any more: it's just too krezzy.

I seem to have talked myself out of going all the way to town, though I should. Found subs, and will be getting to the country store later.

  5. Never had that kind of pie. Wouldn't fly here because Penny has a firm and inflexible objection to pie crust regardless of filling.

  7. Thanksgiving *IS* her day, lol! It'd break her heart not to do it. They could prolly skip Christmas and she wouldn't notice. But not Thanksgiving. . . .

  8. Listening to NPR on the way to the store. They're in NH covering the election (to be). Voter called in, they asked him how many of the candidates he'd met. Five. Who'd he like? Huntsman seemed sanest. Who would he vote for? Me? I'm a moderate. Obama.

listener, the cherry-apple pie sounded good, but your mini pies sound great!

  11. Evidently a stroke. At 85. I wouldn't think a bad way to go. She certainly did much in the life she was given.

  12. Definitely. Quickly and with minimal suffering is the way to go! Yes, she did a lot. She was a fine writer who influenced many other writers and brought pleasure to very many readers.

  13. Sorry to hear it. I got many, many hours of pleasure from her writing.

  14. The little pies are in the oven at last. I only made the apple-cherry kind and not the apple-cheese, because I was running out of steam. Gotta go make the stuffing. But Son and family are here. Just waiting now on Daughter. The rest are local and arrive in the morning.

Soooo tired!! But very happy. I got heaps of Granddaughter Hugs tonight! What an amazing feeling!!

We got only a dusting. So glad for that.
Everybody got here safely who was coming from away.
The locals arrive in the morning.
