Pear?

Could a pear tree really grow that tall? That's the tree I posted the blossom from!

  2. Sooo! My dress for the wedding arrived today and it *IS* going to work!!!

It only needs a little taken in at the top of the bodice (because I'm petite).
I'm very happy with it! Now to find a jacket (and hat...and shoes...).

It's such a relief to have the dress, though.

  3. And such a purty dress it is. Hope you can get that jacket, too: it'd be perfect!

And yep, pears can and do grow that tall, and taller, lol! I have a friend in Brandywine that has an old fruiting pear in their back, and it's about four stories tall, and the Bradford pears that line the Navy Base are taller than those.

  4. The flowering pears with an upright habit that are common steetside trees hereabouts must be about 30-40 feet tall in a few years. They are not very invasive.

  5. And the fruiting pears in particular can bear heavy pruning and shaping. I hope you don't have fireblight back there...it's the main danger for pears out here.

  6. It seems they have discovered why Air France flight 447 crashed: pilot error.

Hmmmm....what shall I do today? Go surfing? Veg out? Locate the universe's missing mass? Or?

  8. I had a friend in China who taught English at the Aviation University: pilots ('cause English is the international flying language). She said all she could envision was a China Air 747 coming into SF, and being directed to "Drop! Stat" -- and the pilot saying: 'Scooze me. You *say*?"

  10. The kiddle and his father finally arrived (delayed by a flat tire), and are up playing in the garden. AND the cat has food (he was getting tired of salmon, poor fella, lol!).

  14. WOW!

I'm particularly pleased that it was a girl who made this discovery. But, gosh. What do you do for an encore? 8-)

  16. Back safe and sound from a day trip to San Jose, with shopping, visiting with Naomi over lunch, and seeing some of the attendees at Fanime 2011 in the vicinity of the convention center. Miyoko hadn't ever seen such costumery before, and I had only seen photos. Looked like good fun! Light showers unanticipated by all, including the Weather Service, showed up in the afternoon and followed us home to Fresno. Now to veg out.

  20. I got a batik jacket today!! It's mostly cobalt/royal blue, with light aqua and brown designs thoughout. I also got a deep aqua, thin sweater that has a shawl collar and is all flowing in the front (I forget what that's called, but it's very pretty). The sweater would probably be too hot for mid-August, but it's so elegant with the dress. Plus, I found a pretty brown hat to decorate...maybe with aqua ribbon and rosette or maybe with beads. So I think that means brown beads.

One issue, though. Son was going to wear a tan or brown suit, so I thought the bits of brown would go well in all the family photos. Just learned that son is going to wear a dark charcoal suit. Hmmm. Not sure brown would look as nice with the charcoal. Maybe I need to look some more for different hat? Suggestions?

  21. That is immensely sad. My heart goes out to all the families, especially the families of the pilots.

  22. LOL, puddle!!

That is such an awe-inspiring event! And I like this part too:

"Whenever I speak to people who have influence, politicians and so on, they sometimes ask me 'Why should I invest in physics pure research?'. And I sometimes say to them: 'Do you use a mobile phone? Some of that technology came about by black hole research'.

    Go Black Hole researchers!
