Second string is DIY publishing. Nowadays there are various print-to-order companies. You send them the book in electronic format, they assign it an ISBN number and put it into their catalog. Anyone who wants a copy specifies the binding and if appropriate degree of color, and it is automatically printed, bound, and mailed. The author gets a cut. Since there is no inventory, there are no storage costs. Some are a little better deal for the author than others. I can ask Naomi for suggestions if anyone is interested. Oh--I just remembered one:
My favorite writer about writing recommends lulu. I just recommended it to my sister, who's doing a book of her own Christmas poetry.
About them roots and wings. . . . From the UU songbook:
“Spirit of life, come unto me Sing in my heart, all the stirrings of compassion Blow in the wind, rise in the sea Move in the hand, giving life the shape of justice Roots hold me close, wings set me free Spirit of life, come to me, come to me
One thing to remember about DIY publishing is that marketing is entirely *your* responsibility. The publisher does no marketing at all. If you have a good idea how to market the book, that can work. I once knew someone on-line who for roughly a decade made a reasonable living with a continually updated book that librarians used for reference purposes. He could do a better job of selling into this particular market than traditional publishers could. All this ended when librarians started getting the information on-line rather than from his print book, but that's another story.
BTW, I put a couple of entries on the previous thread just after the 11 p.m. deadline.
listener, my mom had two books published, but the publisher just wasn't that interested in marketing, so she pretty much carried around boxes of books in the trunk of her car for decades. I thought she might have done better contracting with a printer. . . .
Cat. this is the lady I was talking about earlier vis a vis lulu. Looking at her wiki, you may already know who she is, lol! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teresa_Nielsen_Hayden
This is her blog: http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/ -- or was.
I did NOT know she'd been raised Mormon, but excommunicated. Another reason to like her, lol!
