Relocating to NC

Monisha Sujan checks in again from North Carolina today—she shared her story of escape from New Orleans via email earlier this week.

I was heartened to see this post by susanhu on Booman Tribune:

President Gore Brings Victims Home

`My understanding," said the local owner of a Tennessee ambulance service, "was that he [President Al Gore] made this happen, that he actually arranged for this aircraft."

"An American Airlines plane arrived at McGhee Tyson Airport at 3:10 p.m. Saturday with about 130 people from New Orleans.

"Former Vice President Al Gore was on the plane, helping patients. He did not grant interviews to reporters Saturday.

When I first read this story, I was so focussed on the picture of a disheveled Al Gore rolling up his sleeves (metaphorically--they're short sleeves, actually) to help, and the great story, that I totally missed the fact that Susan had called him *President* Al Gore. Heh. But on second thought--DAMN STRAIGHT!

Next, if you've followed my posts here for the past few days, I've been raging about Bill Frist's mustache-twirlingly evil insistence that *now* is the time to permenantly do away with a tax paid by millionaires. I was heartened to see that Howard Dean has released a statement on this.

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean released the following statement in response to reports that Republican Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist will push for a vote on Repealing the Estate Tax when the Senate returns on Tuesday:

"Countless thousands of our fellow Americans throughout the Gulf Coast region continue to suffer in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. While some have begun the painful task of rebuilding their lives and coping with the unfathomable loss, so many still await help. And the cost of this disaster in human and material terms remains unknown.

"It's simply irresponsible for Senator Frist and Ken Mehlman to even think about spending our tax dollars on breaks for millionaires at a time when our top priority must be to ensure we have the resources needed to address the long and short term costs associated with rescue, recovery, and rebuilding in the wake of hurricane Katrina. Not to mention the vital lesson we learned this week about the deadly cost of diverting funds at the expense of the safety of the American people. These costs also come at a time when our nation faces a massive deficit, and mounting costs in the ongoing war in Iraq.

"There is also a question of values, priorities and choices. Tens of thousands of our fellow Americans have literally lost everything; we have a responsibility to put their needs first. Senator Frist should join Democrats in Congress who understand that our priority as a nation must be to focus our energy and resources on determining how we help the victims begin to rebuild their lives and addressing the long term issues we face as a nation in the aftermath of Katrina.

"Perhaps seeing the images on television was not enough this time for Senator Frist and having now had the chance to actually look some of the victims in the eye, he'll be able to better diagnose the situation, get his priorities straight and recognize that the victims of this crisis, and providing the resources to keep our people safe in the future, must be our highest priorities."

I love the way he continues to say what *I'm* saying and thinking--only much better.

I got a heads up about this from a longtime DKos reader who figured I might be an effective messenger. Generally I am not in the habit of posting other people's work, but this is by request, so I am posting it.

  1. It is time to shake the trees, rock the boat, rattle the cages,...Howard Dean needs to raise his voice and speak for the liberal wing of the Democratic Party, not the Democrats who are willing to 'triangulate' with the Republican agenda.

Triangulation was for the Clinton era. We are entering a new era. Just like one hundred years ago when the Gilded Age began to crumble, the writing is on the wall for those who would --- literally --- throw the poor to the dogs while they reap great profits off of the backs of those same people.

Their lies are being exposed. Watching the video of Mr. Broussard crying for help from an indifferent administration may very well be the death knell for the Republican agenda. Because now they are pissing off people who 'look like them'.

  2. You tell 'em, Howard!!!

Switching topics: President Gore. Well, yess, but former President Gore now. Our current duely elected president is one John Kerry. Anyone seen *him* acting presidential? What's he doing to help? Son of a bitch!!! However, it's great to hear about Al's activities. More power to him.

*grumble, grumble* Wouldn't put it past Kerry to vote for repealing the estate tax. He's not a *real* Democrat... Can you tell I'm still *REALLY* pissed at him for conceding immediately?

Ah, sorry to be so down. Not feeling very well today, though the weather's beautiful. Not as gorgeous as yesterday, but pretty great. Guess I'm just tired. I'll do my best to refrane from moaning and whining too much here.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the citizens of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama as they struggle with the aftermath of this devastating storm, and to their loved ones and families viewing the disturbing photos coming out of the region. I also would like to commend the brave men and women who are leading the rescue operations; from emergency service officers to health care professionals to the power and water crews working around the clock to save lives.

“Hurricane Katrina devastated significant portions of the Gulf Coast and disrupted millions of lives. The situation in New Orleans is heartbreaking.

“We cannot and must not give up on the people left stranded and destitute by this storm. This is a national tragedy and it demands a national response. At home in Massachusetts, citizens and corporations are donating time, money and their expertise to help out and I know the same thing is happening in every state in the country.

“Now is the time for all of us to come together to help our fellow Americans rebuild the communities that have lost so much.

“Elected officials, emergency personnel and incredible volunteers are working round the clock. These emergency workers are heroes.

“While Americans are united and determined to help the people who are suffering, there is no question that we share a collective anguish and frustration over the inadequate response of the federal government over these past several days. Federal officials must act swiftly in coming hours and days to direct more aid to the region as rapidly as possible.

“Last night the Senate allocated $10.5 billion to help fund immediate relief efforts. Although that is a welcome first step, I plan to work in coming days to find more ways that we can help joining with my colleagues in the Senate to support those who have lost so much and those working so hard to help them.

“I am also directing my team at johnkerry.com and my leadership committee Keeping America’s Promise to help. This week we have sent out fundraising appeals for the Red Cross and teamed up to help victims find housing at www.hurricanehousing.org. The response has been incredibly heartening. We will be doing more in coming days as we learn more about the best to provide assistance.

“I just returned from spending the week in Iraq, seeing firsthand the bravery of our troops as they face chaos and destruction. Our country has a huge heart and an incredibly strong spirit. We came together to support of our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and their families, now we will come together to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. We will endure and we will survive but we can’t stop working until we get help to all those left suffering. For more information on how to help, visit FEMA’s website or visit the American Red Cross at www.redcross.org. Thank you for your support for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.”

    Yeah, what Sleepless said.

  6. Thanks for posting Governor Dean's statement, Renee, and thanks for the Mr. Bill site. That is priceless! I still want more from Governor Dean, but I love it that Al Gore is helping more or less quietly, "praying in secret." I thought when I saw Frist "helping" on tv in New Orleans in a grandstanding doctor photo op: He should get some negative points for showing off to keep him out of heaven (doubt he would be going there anyway!)

  7. Thanks, Renee. I forgot that the trash can only appears when one is logged in.

As to Kerry, well, nice as far as it goes. Leadership is as leadership does. We'll see. I saw in an article in the Sun Times, was it yesterday or the day before, that Barak Abama (Nuts, can never remember if his name begins with an "A" or an "O!") is going to propose hearings into the nonresponse. I know we don't like him any more, but that's doing something, and a damn site more than telling us to give to the Red Cross.

Hmmm. Am I as angry as Sleepless and Jax?

RE what Jax said on the last thread:

Hey there, Jax, how 'bout telling us how you *really* feel instead of sitting on the fence? ROTFLMAO

Needless to say, I agree with you, friend. When is *somebody* going to start rubbing the Repugs' faces in their responsibility for this catastrophe? It seems like the press has finally started to take their job seriously and actually hold people responsible, some people anyway. But, the people, the population of this country must rise up and make their voice heard in a roar. We must remove this entire corrupt, incompetent government. Just about everyone seems united in disbelief and disgust at what Bush and Co. haven't been doing.

Damn it!!! WE HAVE TO CAPITALLIZE ON THIS OPPERTUNITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where the hell is the Leadership? Can we rally behind Howard, the first leader I have heard actually offering something like a rallying call. If we can't take advantage of this royal flush that has been handed to us, well, then we deserve Bush and the Fascism he's ushering in.

  8. Just so you all know...

When I post as (shadow)listener it means the system recognises me as a blogger.

When I post as listener it means the system has forgotten that I'm a blogger and is allowing me to post under "Other".

I'm trying to remember how I got registered the first time! LOL
What's the website, Renee? I'll bookmark it this time.

  9. Here's a question:

Why isn't this press release from Howard not posted at the DNC website? I find it odd that the latest press release is dated Sept. 2.

Also, Josh Marshall has set up a thread over at TPMCafe "to document, discuss, and dissect that storm of disinformation" over the buck passing on New Orleans.
