I do not anticipate that the Palestinian--Israeli conflict will be finalised for a very long time, if ever. Certainly not in what remains of my lifetime, almost certainly not in the lifetime of anyone now living. Another temporary ceasefire is predictable sooner or later. I am the last in my family to hear (second-hand) of how my great-grandparents fled their homeland to escape the Prussians in 1860-something. ----Alan
I'm as skeptical as Alan, though to my mind any progress, however seemingly small, is worthwhile. Also, on a purely political and maybe petty note, I'm glad this took place on Biden's watch. One less thing for El Trumpu to take credit for.
A damned shame it those workers were to suddenly disappear, that is. It has been my observation that it takes a long time to build up any complex organization but little time to destroy it. -----Alan
We had to replace a couple of four-foot fluorescent bulbs in the kitchen. In 2009 (according to the shipping label) I purchased a box each of two different shades of white (one for the garage, the other for indoors) via Amazon (delivered from Canada--- couldn't buy them in California then), and we are down to four each. I just looked them up on Amazon with very limited success, BUT there are now LED bulbs for a not unreasonable price that just pop into the existing fluorescent fixtures. I figured that would happen, and now it has. -----Alan
I'm about to leave for Boston and the Arisia science fiction convention. My ymuch younger friend Jason and I will be taking the train there and back; I expect to be using a wheelchair at the con. Back next Wednesday morning. Will probably check in here from time to time.
‘Deeply alarmed’: Washington Post staff request meeting with Jeff Bezos Guardian: Over 400 staff members at the Washington Post have sent a letter to Jeff Bezos asking for a meeting with him during a time of widespread concern about the future of the newspaper.
The letter, signed by top journalists and correspondents and sent on Tuesday evening, pleads for Bezos, who is known to rarely visit the Post’s office in Washington, to meet in person with leaders at the office.
“We are deeply alarmed by recent leadership decisions that have led readers to question the integrity of this institution, broken with a tradition of transparency, and prompted some of our most distinguished colleagues to leave, with more departures imminent,” the letter reads.

Israel and Hamas agree in principle to deal
ReplyDeleteReport says finalisation could be hours or days away.

That's a bit of an overstatement; I told my daughter about my great-grandparents fleeing the Prussians, but she seemed uninterested.

DeleteJust heard Laura Ingram say "Hamas wasn't afraid of Biden." Really? Then why is this deal taking place now instead of next week?

I have hope that the warring factions within the Republican Party will serve to take each other down, or at least stymie progress of Project 2025.
DeleteSo far that looks like a good possibility. Fingers crossed!
