Why does Los Angeles have so many bad fires? [Click] The same effect (cold air warming as it descends from the mountains) makes hard freezes rare in California’s Central Valley. No resultant high winds because the only pass through the Coast Range is the entrance of San Francisco Bay, which is far from here. ——Alan

A full moon, a bold Mars and a new comet brighten January’s skies NYT: The first full moon of the year will glide through the sky Monday night. For lucky stargazers in some parts of the world, it will also pass in front of the more-brilliantly-red-than-usual Mars in an event known as a lunar occultation.
But that’s not all January’s sky has to offer. A new comet, expected to be the brightest of the year, is nearing its closest approach to the sun Monday — though spotting it, at least in northern skies, will be tricky. -- nordy
