Trump won, now what David Frum The AtlanticFor supporters of the American experiment in liberal democracy, our only hope is education, organization, and the creation of a coalition of people dedicated to defending the spirit of the Constitution, the ideals of the Founders, the dream of freedom. More concretely: public civic-education campaigns to replace the lessons no longer taught in schools; teams of lawyers who can fight for the rule of law in courts; grassroots organizing, especially in rural and small-town America; citizens and journalists working to expose and fight the enormous wave of kleptocracy and corruption that will now engulf our political system. Many of those shattered by this result will be tempted to withdraw into passivity—or recoil into performative radicalism. Reject both. We should focus, instead, on how to win back to the cause of liberal democracy a sufficient number of those Americans who voted for a candidate who denigrated this nation’s institutions and ideals. -- nordy
Y’know, I home schooled five humans who turned out to be civic minded, well-adjusted, contributors to their communities. They have served as chair of their Dem party, chair of their select board, on committee to renovate their high school, leader of group that pulls up Poison Parsnip plants, leader who grew food for local shelters and food shelfs, school board member and more. All of them have volunteered for candidates. They vote. What’s more, they are teaching their children well. Eldest grand served as student rep on her select board before going off to college. I have volunteered for numerous campaigns and work hard to encourage the good. I’m just going to keep on keeping on. It’s not on me to fix the stupid mess caused by others’ lax parenting and educational systems.
Good for you and yours, listener. I hadn't heard of poison parsnip before, so looked it up and found it is the same as "poison hemlock." I remember a story in a collection of murder mysteries written by women in which the principal character offs her no-good husband with a salad including poison hemlock. ----Alan

Before Trump can pass his unconstitutional and MAGA policies and executive orders, he will have to go through NY Attorney General Leticia James first, who has beaten him over 50x in prior cases against his first term, and won a $450 million dollar fraud judgment against him in 2024. Popok is @ The Intersection about there being no finer battlefield "Attorney General" than Tish James who has the playbook on how to beat Trump and his policies at his own game, and where at a press conference in NY just after the election, she basically called out Trump and told him to "bring it on." —Alan
Wil and j ran some errands in Burlington. This afternoon. Got about half done when we got a call from a neighbour telling us our driveway was blocked by a tree. She sent a photo. It looked to Wil like a large branch that he could handle with his chainsaw, so we quit errand running and dashed home. Turns out it wasn't just a large branch. When we arrived we discovered it was the whole top two-thirds of a White Pine, trunk, branches and all! Wonderfully, our usual tree guy had been working on a neighbor's tree today, saw our emergency, and was already working on it when we arrived! So he and Wil moved it all off the driveway and next week this good tree guy will come by and haul away the refuse. Extra nice that it was all done just in time for the evening to be dark.
We mean what you now. Quite a coincidence with the tree guy! And also that the tree didn't do any serious damage (like smashing part of your home). -----Alan
