    1. Thinking back over the governors of California as far back as I can remember, the two I liked the best were Pat Brown, who was very popular, but while I was a boy; and Jerry Brown, his son, who served four terms, two at at time, with an interval of 28 years between. No one else comes close.

  2. Wil and I have been discussing "How shall we now live?" given the changes coming.

In practical terms, we'll buy an appliance before Biden leaves office, because tariffs won't be an issue yet. We will plan ahead to buy less and make do more (and if everyone does that and it leads to a recession, so be it). We will donate to Doctors Without Borders and World Central Kitchen and find Etsy items that come from Ukraine. We will keep in touch with our legislators, for their support and our information, and choose a few trusted news sources to READ and not watch TV media.

We will be highly supportive of our grandchildren, watching over the teens especially, and our kids as well of course, to lend support and encouragement.

As DT's Administration does its thing and makes bad trouble, we will see what makes sense to do. But we will be more deliberate to enjoy the beauty in life, read books, make art, take walks, sail in Summer, etc., and work more on getting all the details of life in order for the time when we are no longer here. Just some longer term goals.

So, just basically live as best we can without freaking out. But always be on the lookout to encourage the good.

Wil is pretty sure that there are safeguards against DT doing the worst stuff his cronies want to see happen (from Bannon to Orban). I'm less trusting of that, because we see what Russian disinformation bots have done. But I agree with Wil that the more those bozos do terrible things, the faster people will become distanced and disenfranchised. We'll see.

Hang on tight and please keep coming by!!! You too, Catreona and Susan and Renee! You are much missed!!

  4. I have a half-day of outside errands to do today, but I’ll be back. Since the cascade of bad happenings in my family I’ve been imitating a turtle, head and all extremities drawn safely inside my shell. I thought I could come out after the election. Silly me. I underestimated the amount of hate and stupidity among my fellow citizens. But now when I come out I will be a Snapping Turtle, and those suckers can BITE! ~Susan

    1. "California has been setting up guardrails to protect its resident’s rights under an adversarial federal government. The state has enshrined abortion rights in its constitution, passed a ballot initiative explicitly defending the right of same-sex couples to marry and pushed for tougher gun laws that still adhere to the supreme court’s narrow interpretation of the right to bear arms."

Well done California! Vermont has done the same on all three issues. We did Civil Unions back when Howard Dean was Governor, and that has since become marriage equality.

Our vulnerability is likely going to show when we have another serious flood and DT withholds Federal funds. Interestingly, it was under our current Republican Governor that abortion rights became enshrined in our Constitution and tougher gun laws were enacted.

  8. I know that Alan has cited them, but these are the guys I watch on You Tube that have helped me keep from falling over the edge. They are: Meidas Touch, Brian Taylor Cohen, Adam Mockler, Michael Popok, Farron Cousins, Glen Kirschner, Mary Trump and Legal AF. I highly recommend them as fact-based reporters of the Progressive persuasion. ~Susan

    1. I watch those guys too, except for Mary Trump. I'd add Luke Beasley, Alan Lichman and "Shrinking Trump," whose hosts promise to stay on until the inauguration. I also enjoy "George Conway Explains"

  13. Federal workers prepare for cuts, forced relocation
    in Trump’s second term
    WAPO
As Donald Trump is now less than three months away from retaking the White House, an office he won in part by pointing to his record as a businessman, thousands of federal workers in the D.C. region and across the country this week once again adjusted to a new status — as his future employees. And he has signaled many of them could soon be on the chopping block. -- nordy
