It is said that Harris is BRAT

  1. Could anyone here enlighten me about the evidently new meaning of "brat"? I know it as a misbehaving young male, or as short for "bratwurst;" neither of which seems to fit here.

    1. From Wikipedia:
Brat is the sixth studio album by English singer Charli XCX, released through Atlantic Records on 7 June 2024. It features production by Charli XCX, her longtime executive producer A. G. Cook, Finn Keane, Cirkut, her partner George Daniel, and others. The album draws influence from the 2000s English rave music scene, with a more aggressive club sound than her previous album, Crash (2022). A deluxe edition with three additional tracks was released on 10 June 2024.

Brat was met with critical success. Commercially, it debuted at number two on the UK Albums Chart and reached the top ten in 12 additional countries, including the United States, where it debuted at number three, Charli XCX's highest debut. According to Metacritic, it is the highest-rated album of 2024 and the 16th-highest-rated album of all time as of August 2024. The album was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize for 2024 album of the year.[2]

The cover art and aesthetic became a popular Internet trend, and was adopted by U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris's 2024 presidential campaign, which Charli XCX endorsed.[3]

    2. "After President Joe Biden announced he would no longer be seeking re-election and instead endorsing Kamala Harris, Charli XCX took to X to offer her own seal of approval, proclaiming: “kamala IS brat.” Memes swiftly followed, as well as impossibly fast t-shirts with Harris’ name printed in the style of the “Brat” album cover. Even the Vice President’s official rapid response account on X, @kamalahq, is now topped with a “Brat” style banner."

The colour is an eye-popping lime green (as shown in the photo out front).

    3. Thank you; it is now slightly clearer to me than mud. Doesn't make much sense though, which I suppose demonstrates that I am a fossil. I suppose one could translate it as "popular."

    4. Alan, you speak for me, friend. I read what Listener posted, and it might as well have been Greek. *sigh*

I saw a few days ago where Nancy Sinatra offered "These Boots Are Made for Walking" to the campaign, though not whether they accepted. Now, that's my speed.

    5. Charli came out with an album recently, called BRAT, with a cover that's completely lime green. The theme of her album, as I read it, is along the lines of being "badass" and strong. Charli then called Harris "BRAT" which Harris immediately accepted and they used the colour on her website. Hence the reference.

    3. Yeah, but they can't get this done before the Election, so he HAS to lose the Election or he'll just order this thrown out.

    4. Not state charges. And it's state charges we're talking about.

  3. Swan Arcade: Babylon Is Fallen [Click] A nice performance. I find references to it first being published in a Shaker hymnal; not sure if this is that original, [Click] but it has five verses rather than the two or three commonly sung, and sounds older to me.

    1. As I recall, "Babel" is often pronounced with a long "a", as "Bay-b'l."

    2. Babel is actually pronounced with a short a, as one might also speak of a babbling brook.
The Tower of Babel story in Scripture tells of people suddenly not understanding one another's language.

    3. I know that most Americans pronounce Babel as babble, but I'm pretty sure some Brits pronounce it Bay-bl, and some Americans used to as well.

  4. The World Turned Upside Down [Click] Could this be the song played at the British surrender at Yorktown? Far too upbeat for that, I think, but it could certainly be played otherwise.

    2. "EEEV is a rare but serious disease transmitted to people by infected mosquitos. The last reported human EEEV infection in New Hampshire was in 2014, when DHHS identified three human infections, including two fatalities. In addition to the person with EEEV infection announced today, EEEV has been detected in one horse and seven mosquito batches in New Hampshire so far this summer. EEEV has also been detected in neighboring states, including in Massachusetts (one person, one horse, and 69 mosquito samples) and Vermont (one person and 47 mosquito samples). "

    3. Allow me to suggest mosquito repellant based on extract of lemon eucalyptus; non-toxic and works almost as long as DEET sprays. I read about it, gave it a try, and have been well pleased. For reasons unknown, we have had almost no mosquitos so far this year. For reasons also unknown, they are strongly attracted to me, but hardly to my better half.

    4. You haven't had many mosquitoes this year due to a dry Spring. They need moisture to proliferate...thus the proliferation of them in New England this season.

    2. Nordy, thanks for the suggestion. It gave me a good laugh. Unfortunately, that's precisely the sort of thing I can't do for myself. Could you please see if you can scare me up an appropriate photo and leave a link over there on the post? If you can't, that's Okay, of course.

  8. A day or two ago Ukraine struck Russia's largest oil refinery, in Omsk (southwestern Siberia). It produced 10% of Russia's gasoline. No word yet if any productive capacity survived.
