Flower in the Garden

  1. Thanks, Alan, for the article on the iPhone8. My 4 is still putzing along, but eventually will conk out. Sis mentioned the 8 having some problems and being more expensive than seemed reasonable. But your Guardian article clinched it. I'll wait a little longer. Also, I need to check out more of my iPad's capabilities. There are tantalizing hints that it may be able to accommodate phone calls. Certainly not ideal, but useful if my phone dies before being replaced.

    1. I have thus far had but one iPhone, Cat...the 4S. Still blundering along with it, too.

    2. Best Rugged Smartphones (Unlocked) 2017[Click] Military specification. Big batteries, shock, water, dust resistant, some high definition cameras—and the ones I checked prices on were downright affordable compared to a new iPhone. Some of them do look like they came out of a tank factory, and most of the brands are unfamiliar (at least as smart phones), but, hey—anyone can have an iPhone, right? [Sez the guy with a Nokia candy bar phone.)

    3. You got yours not long after I got mine then. Couldn't believe it when Peter showed me his 5. It was so much bigger than the 4. The 4 fits in my hand just about perfectly. Certainly don't want one that's any bigger - that's what my iPad is for.

  2. Interesting coincidence re Kushner's use of a private email account: I just got an email setting up my volunteer email account for Worldcon 76, with an explanation of why I should use it for all official business. (Worldcon 76 is the 76th World Science Fiction Convention, to be held in San Jose next August.)

    1. This just noted:

“House Democratic investigators are launching a congressional probe of Jared Kushner’s use of a private email for work purposes, a development that threatens to escalate the Russia-related controversies already surrounding President Trump’s son in-law,” Politico reports.

      That didn't take long.

    2. Good to see they're on it. May his road to jail be smooth and short!

    3. I cannot suppress a "Pffft" sort of giggle every time I read that Kushner has been doing what HRC was chastised for. What hypocrites these fools be.

Bill, I just read on the last thread that your Dad died wen you were 13. That's a terribly hard age for a young man to lose a Dad. Were there any strong uncles or other men in your family who stood by you in your teens? My heart goes out to you.

The man who was best man at our wedding was thrust into adulthood when his Dad died of a heart attack when he was in high school. The family owned a paving company and there were high level meetings this young man (the heir) was suddenly having to attend, decide about and sign documents. His grandfather was a wonderful businessman, but far too old to attend the meetings. So the grandfather would make recommendation and coach him a bit, then our friend would have to attend the meetings. It was so hard because final decisions had to be made real time and alone. And this poor kid had a nervous personality to begin with. In the end, he inherited millions, but lacked self discipline and squandered it all by the time he was 40. So sad.

It sounds like you fared better by far. More power to you!

    4. To listener's question about uncles: No. My father's older brother lived in our town, but the families had never been close and in any case the uncle died only a few years after my father did. My father's younger brother lived into his 70s, but hundreds of miles away.

    1. Hurrah for Susan Collins! She is one of the more thoughtful Republicans out there. I hear she is considering running for Governor of Maine next time (2020, I think) and more power to her. The guy they have now is the worst sort of Repub muggle.

    1. Yes, I heard this on NPR as I drove home from Burlington today. We have two very immature and powerful bullies running amok with nuclear capability. Damn Scary.

  6. We saw another record-breaking warm day across western Mass with highs at Westover hitting 91 this afternoon. The former record was 88 degrees set in 2007.

    1. Here as well, Catreona!

It hit 91 °F, our average is 66 °F, and the former record high was 85 °F (1891).
Incidentally, our *low* today was 66 °F.
