  1. This is from a Charlottesville (sp) resident: " From an actual resident of Charlottesville:

"There seems to be a perception from people outside of Charlottesville that what is going on here is two opposing groups coming to town and fighting some ideological battle that has gotten messy. That is not what is happening here. What is happening here is that several hate groups from the extreme right have come together under the "unite the right" banner here in our town and basically started acting as terrorists. This may seem like an exaggeration but it's not.

A church service was held over because they had surrounded the building and police had to disperse them. People had to be escorted to their cars. My friend was there with her daughter. Everywhere they meet, businesses close. We had drive by shootings yesterday from a van marked kkk.

A car plowed into a huge group of people. I'm sure you saw that on the newsfeeds. What you probably didn't see is that some of those people were on their way back from helping to repel a white supremacist march to predominately black housing development a few blocks away where they were attempting home invasions. I guess they were unfamiliar with the neighborhood. The residents repelled that one before antifa got there but there is some video of the alt-right folks getting run off on the daily progress twitter feed, if you're interested.

So, basically, what I'd like you to understand is, this IS NOT two side egging eachother on to unavoidable violence for more attention. This is one side of terrorists declaring that they can and will hold a town hostage (they've been saying it for over a month now, actually) and the town responding to that threat. The car that killed and injured people yesterday? Ohio tags. The medic tents (which treated both sides... turns out the alt right erst didn’t bring any medics. Guess they planned on doing all the injuring), water bottles, snacks, shade tents (all volunteer, donations, none shut down by police... all manned by that radical left you keep hearing about) yeah, we all live here. I saw a lot of people I knew yesterday, none of them were speaking for unite the right. None of them were escalating violence, most of them were offering some kind of aid and defending."

    1. The mainstream media have finally gotten around to telling us what actually happened in Charlottesville, with eyewitness accounts from both sides as well as reporters and news photographers who were present. It appears that some groups that might be described as "alt-Left" had come to Charlottesville hoping for violent confrontation. The alat-right had not only expected violent confrontation but trained for it. The bit about people from each side goading the other to throw the first punch rings true. It appears there were also times when counter-protesters attempted to passively block the route of march and the white supremacists used their shields to bull their way through.

I also saw, but didn't read or link to, an article describing these alt-Left groups. We all know they exist.

    2. The article also reports that the Charlottesville police stood by without making any effort to separate the two groups or stop the violence. Different in several ways, but reminds me of the Millennium WTO meeting in Seattle, where I was present.

    3. From Nina Turner: "There is no such thing as the “alt-left.” Those who believe Medicare should be available to all Americans are not the same as Nazis. Those who believe that we must fix a broken criminal justice system that is unfair to black, brown and poor are not the same as Nazis. Those who think we should remove statues that were erected as a reminder of white supremacy are not the same as Nazis."

    4. "Those who believe Medicare should be available to all Americans are not the same as Nazis." *Of course not!!* Those are not the al-Left. It's hard to believe Turner is so clueless she doesn't know this. She's never heard of the really, really extreme groups out on the left fringes? The people who believe that breaking store windows is a strike for freedom? They exist.

    5. No, they don't. The "alt-left" is a fantasy brewed up by supporters of the "alt-right" to deflect attention from their own violence. Brad wrote a great piece on Facebook. There is no "alt-left". The "alt-left" are anti Nazis. This shouldn't even be something to think about. Anti Nazi should be everybody's default position. Nina Turner has been far more active in politics, more intensely involved, served as a Senator in Ohio and I think you're 100% WRONG to discount her awareness and her knowledge of the situation.

    6. "The people who believe that breaking store windows is a strike for freedom? They exist" In far lesser numbers than you seem to think. The majority of the times careful investigation has shown that the ones who provoke violence or "break windows" are actually cops, or right-wing infiltrators acting violently to make the left look bad. I have been to rally after rally and march after march over the last 13 years and I have NEVER EVER seen any acts of violence or of property destruction.

  2. Thanks, Susan; good hearing. I was reading about the Confederate memorial statues removed in Baltimore last night, and was actually shocked that one was of Roger B. Taney! It seems there is one at the state Capitol, which the Governor has called to remove.

P.S.: There are rumors that the rats may be leaving the sinking ship that is the White House ere long. Let Trump row his own galley.

  3. Every administration faces unanticipated crises; to be prepared to respond well to anything and everything takes takes not merely skill but organization, neither of which is to be found in Trump's "administration." Hell, he can't/won't even fill the open positions!

  4. Charlottesville is one of the lovelier places on God's green earth. UVA is an amazing, gorgeous experience. I keep thinking about Skokie in 1977. . . .

  5. Right now there is a vigil and peaceful march taking place in Charlottesville. They were singing "We shall overcome someday." It breaks my heart that we're still singing "someday."

  6. Since there is no federal leadership, let the states lead. Talk to your local reps. Show them this!
