  1. Houston, we seem to have a trend![Click] Today Gallup’s three-day rolling average disapproval rate for Trump has reached 61%, and disapproval 34%—both records. It really does look like both are trending after a long period of stability.

P.S.: Reading about our old monsters crawling out from under rocks and out of basements, as well as their activity in the GOP[Click], makes it still clearer to me that the Republican Party is likely going the way of the Whigs. So I find myself wondering if the Democratic Party would take disintegration of the GOP to mean they don't have to change, as well as how an opposition party will develop. One thing, though, is progress: it seems that Catholics are safe this time.

    1. As a Catholic I'm relieved to hear that. Have been feeling rather insecure lately.

OTOh I'm cynical enough to suppose the Democratic Party will seize upon any opportunity not to change.

Still registered Dem. but, having gotten my new state ID today, I'm free to change that now. Last summer I'd have done it in a heartbeat. Now I'm not so sure, inertia and all that. But it's a viable option now.

    1. Who says Trump can't learn? This afternoon he announced to the ladies and gentlemen of the press that racism is evil and those who commit violence in its name are criminals. See? Those teleprompter reading lessons have really paid off.

  3. Thanks, Bill, for the kind words on the last thread.

Okay, I misunderstood. I thought it was just a bunch of idiots marching to save a statue of a general who lost a war. A stupid waste of time, but harmless enough. The more I read, I realize these were actual Nazis. And, no, it is NOT all right for Nazis to be marching in the streets of my country.

    1. There were actually a variety of white supremacist organizations. Not just, or even primarily, Nazis. But as I said on a different Facebook page, freedom means freedom for all. Even Nazis.

And yes, I have been a card-carrying member of the ACLU for decades.

    2. I'm relieved to read what you posted here. I was confused as to why you would defend the right of Nazis to assemble and speak freely. I'm still trying to catch up with the news too. The Maine Granddaughters leave tomorrow evening. Then I sleep. Then I'm back. But, oooohhhh, they are wonderful!!!! 💖💖

  4. We call on the left to build a strong united front against this emboldened right wing. We need to be clear and recognize that white supremacist terrorism will not simply go away if it's ignored. This violent and dangerous movement should never be allowed to have a platform. It should always be fought against by the strength of our united front.

It is important to acknowledge the differing responses of the police to white supremacist marches and terrorism and their reactions to Black Lives Matter protests and marches. Black Lives Matter protests are always met with the worst police brutality and suppression while white supremacist marches are allowed to freely attack counter-protesters on many occasions.

In this way, we plainly see whose side the police are on. From the days of the creation of the modern day police in the 1800s, they were used as a violent force for the physical suppression of a resistant working class, of Black slaves, and indigenous people. Today, their role of social control and oppression remains largely the same.

  5. The Nazis were not coming to speak. They were coming with shields, brass knuckles, bats, guns and torches. They were coming to inflict bodily harm and to instill terror into the hearts of those who do not agree with them. My father fought the Nazis and his daughter will fight them just as hard. There is no room for Nazis in this country. They carry Nazi flags, Confederate flags and others. They are traitors to America and a real and present danger to our citizens. There is no room for them here.
