Okay, I've got a saying that just popped into my head after all the reading about the Dems. "He who does not recognize his mistakes is doomed to repeat them".
I figure the institutional Democratic Party lost its way and turned its back on its natural base starting about forty years ago; a lot of people continued voting for them as a matter of custom and sympathy with what they had been. I fear they may need a much heavier drubbing than they have had so far. But if I had to bet which major party is more likely to reform rather than return to the primordial ooze, I would bet on the Dems.
I'd agree, Alan, on your dating. By the time I was old enough to vote, it already had drifted away from the party and values that formed my political sensibility.
I am, in a rather perverse way, looking forward to Trump trying to get his [beautiful!] border wall funded as part of the debt ceiling increase and budget resolution...
Said beautiful wall ought to be of alabaster; maybe marble, or just possibly some particularly handsome granite. Maybe some porphyry columns and crenellations.
It's going to be solar, yes, but what will the solar panels be attached to? Can't do any better than alloy 3-276. Stronger than gold, more resistant than gold to almost every form of chemical attack, and, of course, more expensive than gold.
Quite by accident over the weekend I discovered Fascism: The Meaning and Experience of Reactionary Revolution (Studies in Contemporary Politics) by James D. Forman. Written for high school students and published in 1974, it discusses the origins of fascism as well as movements, individuals and governments with fascist tendencies. I found it a useful concise history.
I particularly appreciated the author's careful and consistent distinction between socialism (and democratic socialism) from communism, a distinction all too many people seem unable or unwilling to make.
First of all, we have a new grandnephew!! 💙 Henry Jonah 💙
Also, VT*Granddaughter (almost age 10) enjoyed her first ever Sailing Races! And! An unforecast Squall came up, with strong unexpected wind, and whitecaps. Grandad (Mah*Sweetie) tells me that there were times when the boat was heeling WAY over and Grand was in the cockpit hanging onto the up side, and when a big puff would come her feet were actually lifted off the deck slightly and she would squeal (hit the high notes) then exclaim, "I *love* this!!" LOL!! She got huge smiles from the school owner and the regulars! 😀 Grandad is SUPER proud of her!! A very exciting night on the water for all concerned, and what a spectacular first racing night for VT*Granddaughter!!!
Lucy Maud Montgomery is First!
ReplyDeleteAlan, left a note for you on the last thread.

Don't be silly, Alan. It's going to be a solar wall, remember?

DeleteIn case you're wondering, a bit over 30 years ago I was doing PR for alloy C-276.

This evening I was reminded of this article from April:
