  2. So, I've run back and forth to the credit union three times so far and I'm going to have to go back AGAIN! My son and I are pulling all of our accounts out of the bank we've been in for the last 17 years. A few months ago they sent around a letter bragging about the big financial group they'd just purchased and their rates starting going up. It has been a small bank up to now and the whoop-de-do note of acquisition made me wary. My youngest son receives Social Security disability and I am the Representative Payee. We went to the Social Security Office yesterday to get the direct deposit changed and the clerk told me we've been DOING IT WRONG for years. We've had a joint account, because my son is brilliant, and now she tells me he's not allowed to access his money himself - that I have to have sole control. Supposedly that's for his protection, so he can't spend all his money and have none left for food, etc. It's one of those one-size-fits-all rules that really shouldn't apply to him, but it does because it's a RULE. (I hate rules). So now I have to go back to the credit union, return the checks we can't use, and the debit card he can't use and try ONCE AGAIN to get this mess straightened out. I'm waiting until Monday to be sure I don't smack anybody.

  5. That's awful!! Good for you for catching it before one of you was in crisis mode. No need to smack anybody. It's your (plural) money and they have to treat you accordingly. Stand your ground. Mother to mother I'm so proud of you.
