    1. Party on!!

Hope you have perfect weather and a big crowd! :-D

    2. Weather would have had to try hard to be better. Nice and sunny. Hot, but not as hot as predicted. Shorts and a T shirt were reasonably comfortable.

Bigger crowds on lining the street is something we always hope for and never get. But the parade itself went well, as did the after-parade entertainment. The Jesse White Tumblers are always spectacular, as is the Praetorian Signing Church choir. (Jesse White is the Illinois Secretary of State.)

After the entertainment was over I was off to my regular monthly book discussioni. Good discussion of Leviathan Wakes by James S. A. Corey, one of this year's Hugo nominees. Next month we'll do another nominee, Among Others by Jo Walton, even though the discussion will occur after the voting deadline.

  2. Sorry to be so AWOL! I've been totally crazy busy, as expected. Started writing this note last night then Mizzen walked across my keyboard, the message was gone, and I needed to press on. Sigh.

On top of running all over creation yesterday gathering party decor, food and birthday gifts, exchanging a catbox (don't ask), getting the car washed and running to the post office, I had to take Mizzen back to the vet. :-( Though her lungs were clear on Tuesday, she was hack-coughing a little more each day. Turns out she has some congestion in her right lung...same one as last time. So she's back on the antibiotic, a little stronger this time. But she's happy and playful and far stronger than before!

  3. Enroute to Family Reunion...which may be the last one with Larry. All ten siblings will be present. Scooting home in time to medicate Mizzen. Spinnaker is fine!

    Off to the library.

  5. Wish I were going somewhere or doing something, anything, but working on modem drivers. . . . Herring boxes without topses, indeed.

Carry on all, and have fun!!

    1. Well found and downloaded the appropriate driver. It didn't open; it was "unreadable" ~~ so now I'm off to download FireFox, on the off chance it'll do better than WaterFox. . . . Rope is getting VERY short.

Did I mention that I'm getting angrier and angrier at Dell for shipping what is clear they knew was a non-functioning computer? Am.

    2. Can't you get an exchange or your money back?

    3. If I started over, then I'm back to square one, after about two solid weeks work. The computer itself seems fine -- the hold-up is the modem, and they knew when they shipped it that its drivers were out of date. They also seem to have no way on their site (I have twenty tabs open, looking) to download drivers for the modem. Conexant provides "generic" drivers, but warns they do more harm than good, so go back to the mfgr, and get new ones *there*. . . . Beyond that, there's a lot of actual contempt on the Dell forums for idiots that *need* modems. . . . Sort of like having your husband have an affair, and then being blamed because "happy men" don't stray. . . .

Anyhoo, am done for the day, and maybe the rest of the weekend: just accepting that every page will need to be reloaded five or six or seven times for it to take, if it does at all. . . . Going to try to think about other things, do other things, that don't require much modem help.

  6. I found a third poem, as Puddle suggested, and the entry is off. At least, Dad has taken it, presumably to mail next week. The deadline for the contest is September First, and I don't remember seeing any mention on the contest web site of when the winner is announced. So, I'm going to put it out of my mind.
