  2. listener, tried your new link. The page loads beyond slow ~~ 7 or 8 minutes. For the main page. Evidently very clunky/big pages. Think I'll just stick with weather underground, lol! Their radar is terrific, and loads in about a tenth of the time. I don't get speed, etc., but if I set the loop up, I get a very good idea where and how fast it's coming. I think most programmers don't factor in dial up any more. Heck, even computer makers don't -- if you get a brand new computer, you have to special order a modem installed on it. . . .

  3. Oh, and here's a dandy quote from David Lloyd George:

A fully equipped duke costs as much to keep up as two Dreadnoughts, and dukes are just as great a terror -- and they last longer.

  4. Bright, windy, and beasty cold (45ยบ). And laffin, knowing that forty five degrees next April is going to feel paradisically warm. . . .

  5. *** The Ally News today is AWESOME!!! ***
(Just sent it to you, puddle, but HAD to post this here as well!)
I couldn't read it aloud to Hubby...I just broke down and sobbed for joy!

    Lots of news today!

    1. Ally's bone marrow results were NED (no evidence of disease)!!!

    2. Ally has been off chemo long enough that we can stop one of her medications!  She has been on this antibiotic since first being diagnosed!

    3. We only have one week left weaning Ally off her appetite stimulant medicine and that will be one more med off her list!!!

    4. Ally's next HAMA draw will be November 18. [To see if she's ready for her next 3f8 treatment.]

    5. Ally came to Mommy's school today and participated in the Halloween parade!
(Yes, it is one of the last elementary schools to do a Halloween parade and it is AWESOME!!!)

    6. We have a busy weekend ahead with a birthday party and trick-or-treating.

    Ally Dictionary:
“Napmak” (nap - mak): noun: Ally's word for napkin (one of her few baby words left).

  8. Alan ~

Interesting quotes, but what I was mostly asking was for the article writers to tell me what *they* meant by liberal. And in my lexicon it's not true that everyone is either a liberal or a conservative. (Or even a Democrat or a Republican, remembering that for Gilbert and Sullivan these were party labels, not ideological tendencies.) I recognize such views as moderate and anarchosyndicalist.

Of course, not everybody described as conservative is an extreme right-wing radical. But it does seem odd that extreme right-wing radicals are described as conservatives. As are people like Falwell and his followers, who took over the Southern Baptist Convention and reshaped it is ways fundamentally at variance with its traditions.

Conversely, no one would describe environmentalists as conservative. Yet their fundamental position is that they don't want anything to change.

  9. Developers have been ignoring dialup for years. Hotshot, snot-nosed kids think all they have to design for is the most up-to-the-minute version of their personal favorite software and hardware. No consideration for people who might use something other than the bestselling browser, let alone offbeat hardware. It drives me bananas! Nobody's interested in backwards compatibility. Nobody's interested in graceful degradation. Hell, nobody bothers making sure they have valid, well-formed (correct) code. Honestly, I don't know why the W3C even bothers.

  12. Thanks, Alan. Those definitions gave me a smile. There's no doubt in my mind which I am.
