Autumn is well underway

  1. Howard is first, as always.

To answer Susan's question from earlier: I spent two hours this afternoon on-line with the team that will be putting on the 2011 World Science Fiction Convention in Reno. Then I went to the library to get Peter Beagle's The Last Unicorn, which the Futures and Fantasies group will be discussing the latter part of next month. Got off a couple of questions for an e-mail interview with Cherie Priest, the author of Boneshaker. I will be leading another group's discussion of that in a couple of weeks. Finally got around to making my hotel reservations for SMOFcon (the convention for people who help put on conventions) in early December. Only to discover that hotel rooms were available only for Friday and Saturday, the actual days of the con. Which meant I had to change my plane reservations to come back on the red-eye from San Franscisco Sunday night instead of taking the early morning flight from San Jose on Monday. Then I read e-mails from earlier in the week, including summaries of both news and research articles in Science magazine.

None of which would be of sufficiently broad interest to justify posting here, but it explains what I was doing when Susan asked her question.

  2. Busy fellow, Bill! We laid around in the AM, got some serious pruning (of the neighbor's japanese yew which was overgrowing the fence) done, ordered some hybrid epiphyllums ordered, and along the way had pizza for dinner and ordered some absinthe from Delaware Phoenix Distillery in Walton, NY by way of Catskill Cellars in Downsville, NY, both of which look to be just a little ways down the road from the Green Mountain State, where I expect that Dean fella is even firstlier than in many other places!

An empty street. Wind blows a piece of paper down the street, somewhere a shutter bangs repeatedly. Lawns are overcome with knee-high weeds. Mailboxes are stuffed to overflowing.

    Where the heck is everybody?

I loved the way you wrote that, Susan! Hubby and I were in Maine visiting Daughter before she left for Switzerland, visiting Son before he left for the Gulf of Mexico (again; he was home for two days), and visiting our eldest and youngest granddaughters. While there I couldn't get the Comments page to load for some reason. I wonder if others were having a similar problem.

    Anyway, I'm back!

  5. The national media continue to devote inordinate attention to Rahm Emanuel's candidacy for mayor of Chicago. But the Chicago Sun-Times says, "The first question isn't: Can Rahm win? It's: Can Rahm run?"

The thing is, to run for mayor, Emanuel has to have been a resident of Chicago for the past year. He continues to own a house in Chicago and votes from there, but it is rented out and he has no right to live there (unlike Obama, who continues to visit his Chicago home on occasion). Illinois election law gives a lot of weight to intent in establishing residency, and the Emanuel campaign (apparently supported by the Chicago Board of Elections) claims that just owning a house and voting from there is enough. But there has never before been a case where the place you claimed as your legal residence was a place you could not legally live.

Incidentally, I wonder what determines which public figures we are on a first-name basis with. It's "Rahm" but not "Barak." Personally, as an old-fashion Southern boy, I find most of this first-name usage inappropriate.

  6. For my part, Bill, it's because I have zero (and I *mean* zero) respect for Rahm. Obama is accorded slightly more just because he's the President. Slightly more.

  12. Hi all. I have nothing interesting to say tonight. Leading an exceedingly boring life most days. At least it's calm, right?
