Autumn in Vermont

  1. I've heard it said, and I think it's true, Howard's first.

  2. Sooo, I took home a cookbook from the Library this week. Turns out it was written by a cardiologist here in Vermont. Turns out it has a forward by none other than Howard Dean, MD and Judy Steinberg MD!! They personally know the author and his family; their kids played together. Turns out it's the Eating Well for a Healthy Heart Cookbook by Philip A. Ades, MD. All the recipes were tested in Vermont (three towns away from me). Moreover, it has excellent information about what is myth and what is fact, and lots of real knowledge being imparted about what works and doesn't work and why. It's fabulous!

  3. Coming to you from the Quality Inn in downtown Eureka, California. Nice weather, no need to turn on the heater in my room. Had a very nice dinner down the street a bit and around the corner with the public defender who brought me up here and a couple of other attorneys. It seems several attorneys want to see/hear me tomorrow; I joked about charging admission. Visit with the public defender tomorrow morning (after continental breakfast at the hotel), then court at 1:30 PM. That should give me some time to go looking for a souvenir to take back to my better half. (The Old Town shopping district is within easy walking distance.) Forgot to bring sunscreen and a hat! All indications are that court tomorrow will not be disagreeable or unduly contentious. Good. Very good!

  4. Bit warmer today (60ยบ), even have the door open (along with having the oven on, lol!). Very bright, very sunny, a lot of small wind, so it all looks alive and moving.

Hunny's happy: his guy pitched a no hitter last night, and his team won this round. *Therefore* I'm happy. . . .

  5. Turning into a totally *gorgeous* day here. Went to store, got two dozen double yolkers, a pound of the most wonderful longhorn in the world, and my mail, which contained my holographic anti-bird tape (which in my case is actually anti-caterpillar tape). The tape, even nicely folded, makes ME dizzy if I look at it, so I'm hoping that plumes of it on the fence posts will catch Elmer's eye. . . .

I got a couple of packs of pansies that with Thankful's arrival, I totally forgot. They've been sitting in the back of the wagon for a week, doing just fine, thankyouverymuch. Going out to find a place to plant them.

  9. Hi! Roared through the book store after my strength training class. Got the 3rd of a trilogy I've been reading, found a new book by Todd McCaffrey (dragonrider series) and a maahhvelous quilt book complete with the templates.

I handle books the way I handle chocolate. Roar through it in one sitting.

I don't read scholarly books as a rule. I prefer bubblegum for the mind and losing myself in the narrative for a while.

I'm going to exercise a tiny bit of self-control and go down and roast the cauliflower I already cleaned first and make Son #2 a couple of pitchers of lemon tea.

Then I'm going to wallow in new book bliss.

  10. I like the dragonriders books too, though I haven't read any by Tod. Are they any good?

  11. Yes, I think he's had so much exposure to his mom's writing that he kind of picked up the flavor of it. At least I've enjoyed the ones I've already read as much as his mom's

  12. Thanks. I'll have to give them a try.

  14. Puddle, Dad told me about something this evening that I thought might be of interest to you. He just sent along the links. Here's his message:

    Mouse,

Here is some info on wireless internet cards. Don’t know how long these links will be good, since they are for a special deal.

    Pop-up info on wireless card:

    http://www.cellstores.com/_images/partners/national/popups/big_N_pop_laptop_tiger.html?&viewmode=1

They call it a laptop wireless internet card, but the one with a USB connection instead of PCMCIA or Express Card can be used with either a laptop or desktop PC.

The deals. The cards are free with a new wireless plan, but not sure how long that lasts. Looks like AT&T has good data coverage at Sugar Grove, WV. No coverage for Verizon nor Sprint, so she will be limited to the AT&T devices and plans. The standard plan is $60 per month, with data transfer limited to 5 GB per month (unless connected at a WiFi hot spot).

    Dad

I can pass along his e-mail address if you're interested in any of this.

  18. Hey!
They figured out what's been causing honey bees to die off! It's a fungus tag-teaming with a virus.
It is most common in cold, damp weather, and it happens in the bee's gut.

I wonder if the flowers they go to have the fungus.

    Anyway, here's the article: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/07/science/07bees.html?_r=2

  20. Cat, thank you! Took a look. Pretty much no can do. But did find this:
    NIOC Sugar Grove, WV Homepage
Parital overhead view of NIOC Sugar Grove ... Cell phone service is provided for AT&T customers only and limited to direct proximity to the base. ...
    www.nnwc-ftmeade.navy.mil/.../nioc-sugargrove/.../whatsonbase.html

I did not know that. There is some coverage in Franklin, and up and down that valley by Cellular One. And my sister's phone worked at one place in my living room. Everyone else loses their connection before even getting into WV. The navy base, BTW, is about 12 miles north of me.
