  2. Local Election upset! =wOOt!=

    A seat for Selectboard here in Jericho, VT was open and a Republican was running unopposed. This particular man is of the "Take Back Vermont" variety, and has a reputation for being difficult. Well, after it was too late to get another name on the ballot, a mom in town agreed to run with a write-in campaign.

    Tuesday was Town Meeting Day and ... the mom won by a 2 to 1 margin!!!

    =wOOt!!=

    Welcome to the Selectboard, Kim Mercer (D)~!!! :~)

  3. Fabulous. You all will remember that our Marcia Moody was first elected as a write-in in NH.

  4. On a more worrisome note, Charlie's in the news in G'ville.

    That there's a warrant for his arrest is on the second page. One hopes it's because he left the state.

    The story is worse than you think. I received this from Grapski Defense this morning:

    3/4/10 Grapski Persecution Update - Charlie arrested again

    On Thursday morning, Charlie was arrested at home in Kissimmee on an "Out of County Warrant" issued by Judge Nilon. The details are still murky, but the "parole violation" charge is based on the result of a random drug test Charlie was subjected to several weeks ago, in which a finding of 38 nanograms of THC was reported. That is being considered as "possession of marijuana" even though it is well established that positive THC results on that level are not conclusive as to recent drug use, and the exposure could have been months prior, because THC is stored in fat cells and can be metabolized later. In any case, Charlie has been under virtual house arrest in Kissimmee and he is adamant that he is not guilty of the charge, but in his situation he is "guilty until proven innocent," it seems.

    It appears that Fleck and the court are playing games with Charlie and setting him up for more punishment. A court hearing was scheduled by Nilon following the drug test result, but Charlie was not informed about it. Neither was his probation officer in Kissimmee, who would have had to approve Charlie's travel to Gainesville to appear in court. When Charlie didn't appear at the hearing, Judge Nilon issued the arrest warrant. The whole thing smells.

    The arrest warrant wasn't immediately executed, for some reason. When Charlie reported to his parole officer last week, expecting to be arrested, he was not detained and the matter wasn't discussed. He wasn't told anything until this morning (Thursday) when he was arrested at home by Osceola Sheriff's Deputies. Since the warrant served was an "Out of County Warrant" from Alachua County, it is expected that Charlie is being transferred to the Alachua County Jail.

    We'll keep you informed as this situation unfolds. Charlie needs our support during this ordeal, and his incarceration in the county jail serves no purpose, either for society or for him. Unless he is bonded out immediately and allowed to return home, there will be a vigil planned for the jail. Notes sent to this address will be forwarded to Charlie, wherever he is.

    Stay tuned...

  7. Uncharitable person that I am, it occurs to me that rising sea levels will render Florida a much smaller problem. Maybe some of the officials in Alachua are the ones who should be tested to see what they have been smoking?

    Nice Ally update; get some food into her, that's good medicine!

    listener--what or who does the Selectboard unmember have in mind taking Vermont back from? Commonists? The Newnited States? Knownothings? Or...?

    I decided to take a day off to let my virus stay at home and not work hard spreading among my co-workers. It's kind of a weakly little virus and I thought I should be nice to it. I should be OK tomorrow, I think.

    Yesterday started off beautiful, albeit with a cold wind. Clouded up and rained (poured sometimes) afternoon and evening. Clear, then clouds, then clear today. The foothills had a dusting of snow this morning--bet the snow level is below 4,000 feet.

    Google informs me today is Antonio Vivaldi's birthday.

  8. Make that below 2,000 feet, not 4,000. Below Oakhurst, anyway--which is at 2200 feet (I disremembered its elevation).

  9. I must say I was disappointed in the Pope's seemingly mild response to the recent scandalous revelations in Ireland--but this strikes much closer to home. I seem to recall that not so long ago the papal position was that this sort of thing was an American problem:

    A few more details (in Spanish):

    My apologies for posting this, but it's just such a head-shaker; how to deal with such things effectively, in a way that maintains or restores the credibility of the Church, and doesn't tear it apart? And how horribly distressing for the faithful.

  10. Beautiful day here: bright, sunny, warm (40ยบ). Just about done melting snow for bath. Still have five gallons of drinking/cooking water, and a long stretch of warm, so maybe the spring'll start running soon. . . . Which will mean wash time and spring cleaning: heaven!!

  12. donna, thank you for posting this!!

    It is just unconscionable! (How many times must we say such things about Alachua officials?)
    FREE CHARLIE GRAPSKI!

    I cannot wait until the day he is free to shake the dust of that place from his feet forever!!!

  13. Alan, I think he means "Take Vermont Backwards." But it's related to a piece of legislation that regulated land use.
    He wants to pave the town.

    Vivaldi! Ahhhh! It was Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" that got me through the waiting around a very tense medical test a few years ago.

    Hope you're feeling better now.
