    1. Pardon my cultural deprivation, but who is Sam?

    2. Alan, do you already know who Frodo is? Sam is his loyal companion!

Samwise Gamgee (/ˈsæmˌwaɪz ˈɡæmˌdʒiː/, usually called Sam) is a fictional character in J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth. A hobbit, Samwise is the chief supporting character of The Lord of the Rings, serving as the loyal companion (in effect: "manservant") of the protagonist Frodo Baggins. Sam is a member of the Fellowship of the Ring, the group of nine charged with destroying the One Ring to prevent the Dark Lord Sauron from taking over the world.

    3. nordy...Yes! That's how I first encountered it. I thought he must have had it made specially, but then I googled it and was amazed that it's available online! I ordered one, in fact. Gee, think I'd be allowed to wear it at the polls? 😆

    4. Interesting question, listener; I should suppose the supervisor would be at least grumpy about wearing it at the polls.

  2. Not record high temperatures here, but certainly hot. Predicted high today 105F, then daily highs of 108, 105, 98, 96, 98, 103, 104, 99, and 98. We will not be gardening much. I may spray the nutgrass.

    1. Thanks. I saw the movies, but that wasn't enough for it to get implanted into my brain. And I'm old.

    2. It was Sam who carried Frodo when Frodo couldn't go on. Sam is a true hero!

  5. Just got in from some outside work; 93F, 31% humidity---really muggy for us. Gonna hide out inside, probably for the rest of the day.

    1. But wasn't your dew point around 61 just then? You'd really feel it if the humidity were to rise higher than the dew point.

    1. One of the illustrations is a photo of "A resident [who] cools off in Phoenix, Arizona, in July 2023 . . ." by walking across a large area of blacktop in the blazing sun with NO protective clothing beyond a pair of shorts and what might be a reversed baseball cap. It never fails to amaze me how many people think that shedding clothing will make a person cooler in the sun.
