Keeping Vigil

  1. Apologies! I’ve had posts up through Election Day for so long that I got out of the rhythm of posting something new!

We watched the movie Yesterday tonight, with pauses to check returns. It sure feels like a long slog waiting.

And SHEESH! those DT supporters in Arizona showing up to protest with long guns!!! They’re lucky they’re white.

  3. Biden closes within 0.5% of Trump in Georgia, with 5% of ballots left to count.

  4. Per BBC, NC 94% counted, Biden trailing by 1.4%
GA 98%, 0.4% Is that close enough to trigger an automatic recount?

    1. Yes, if memory serves, the cutoff is .5. But of course all the ballots haven't been counted yet. If the margin doesn't widen by the end of counting, the recount will be triggered. *shudder* More hard work by dedicated people and more waiting for the rest of us. I'd rather not think about it!

  5. Georgia does not have any guidelines that would trigger an automatic vote recount. A requested recount can occur if candidates are separated by a margin of 0.5% or less.

North Carolina: An automatic recount is triggered if officials detect an error during a random-sample review of initial voting results. Candidates can force a recount if the margin separating the race is within 10,000 votes or 0.5%, whichever figure is smaller.

Pennsylvania: An automatic recount occurs if the presidential race is separated by a margin of 0.5% or less, or if elections officials identify irregularities in the results.

  6. It is possible that both the Georgia Senate races will go to runoffs. Here's an interesting thought.

"It’s not hyperbole to say the Georgia runoffs would be epic. The amount of money that would pour into Georgia is hard to even contemplate.

But another wildcard is whether a lame duck President Trump would even care anymore.

    As Edward-Isaac Dovere points out:

'If Biden wins and control of the Senate comes down to those two Georgia seats, GOP hopes of winning them/the majority will likely hinge on whether a defeated Trump would invest himself into turning out his voters in races where he’s not on the ballot and wins won’t benefit him.'

That will be amazing to watch."

  7. Another, clearer, article about Bookshop.org. [Click] If the bookshop from whose storefront a book is purchased get 30% of the list price, and the wholesale price is 40% off list price, that leaves 10% for operation of the site. Certainly shipping must be extra to the customer.

    1. Out of curiosity, I carried a book purchase through to the point where I would expect shipping charges, but didn't see any.

  8. In big news for Democrats, Sen. David Perdue (R-GA) has fallen below 50 percent of the vote by AP’s tallying.

  9. Does anyone have a good explanation why the Nevada votes are coming in so slowly? There was a Las Vegas update at 10 a.m. PT, but that was only 2% of the expected vote.

    1. Some polling places slow to open, so all slow to report:

I also saw something about GOP court shenanigans.

    4. Half an hour ago:

Clark County Registrar of Voters Joe Gloria said he is hopeful “the bulk” of the remaining ballots will be processed by Saturday or Sunday.

Gloria said the county still needs to process 63,262 ballots, which are expected to lean toward Joe Biden.

Asked about the president’s baseless accusations of fraud in Nevada, Gloria said, “We are not aware of any improper ballots that are being processed.”

The AP has not yet declared a winner in Nevada, but Jon Ralston, the widely respected editor of the Nevada Independent, says he does not see a path to victory for Donald Trump in the state.

    5. By Nevada law, as long as an absentee ballot was postmarked by Election Day (in this case Nov. 3) it has several days, I think five, to arrive and still be counted. So, that pushes the final tally out even further.

    6. Nevada also prefers not to report in dribs and drabs, as I recall.

    1. Victory? Maybe I missed something, but I haven't seen 170 Electoral College votes yet. Till that happens, ain't nobody victorious. And I personally don't want to see another Dooley Defeats Truman. Just sit back and let the noble and patriotic vote counters do their thing.

    2. Moreover, what is currently known of Senate and House returns hardly constitutes a victory for Dems.

    3. Also the re-election of the Grim Reaper, Moscow Mitch, bodes ill. And supposedly Biden, like all right leaning Democrats is trying to reconfigure his cabinet choices so as not to offend the Evil Turtle. Does he not remember what happened during the Obama years? Run right over Moscow Mitch. Make him pay, and pay dearly, for his obstruction.

    4. Biden wants to unite the country.
Dems always make the same mistake of believing that deep down everyone wants unity.
Mind you, we don’t have a landslide victory for dumping DT.
But I know no Progressive or Democrat who wants to be more Republican, and no Republican who wants to be more Progressive or Democrat-like.

    5. Personally, I would be happy to sit down with Republicans to work out something we could both live with. IF the Republicans would cooperate.
In 2008 I strongly supported Obama because I thought he could work with Republicans. It took about 12 months to become clear that the Republicans had no intention of working with him.

CNN just showed that if Biden wins Georgia DT cannot get past 269, even if he wins every other state that is pending...!!! If it ends at 269-269, it goes to the House of Representatives.

  22. Cat--I see that so far Howie/Walker is getting 1% of the Mass. vote. In California it's only 0.4% so far. Lots of room for growth! Overall, the third-party vote in California seems sort of puny this year, at least so far.

  24. So, I had an adventure today. I drove a half hour east to Youngest's house and picked up Elder*Grandson's car seat, then picked him up at Farm School, about a half hour south. He gave me a tour of his Farm School: goats, chickens, rabbits and baby bunnies, cows, turkeys and ducks, even the hay loft. And he showed me his project of the day, a rudimentary, whittled percussion instrument. Then we loaded his gear into my Mini Cooper and I drove him home. As we pulled into his driveway, he asked if I had brought his percussion instrument. I had set it down at some point, but hadn't picked it up! I could recall what the spot I set it on looked like, but not where that spot is at the Farm. And it was now about 10 minutes to sunset. Heh.

I drove back to the Farm and searched in the half light with my iPhone flashlight. Eventually, I found it over by the goat pen! I had set it down when I was helping Grandson open the gate to the goat pen, because I needed two hands.

Youngest said I needn't bring it back that night But I decided I would bring it straight to Grandson's house because he had been so excited to show it to his family. About 10 minutes from the house, my *brand new* right front snow tire quickly went flat!! I have never had a tire go flat in less than a minute. Wow. I called AAA and Wil and they got there about the same time. So my Mini got towed to the Mini Service Dept and we brought the instrument to Grandson.

Gotta say, it's a good thing I didn't decide to drive home after the Farm School instrument pick up, because the tire went flat on a side road in downtown Burlington. Had I just driven for home, it would have quickly gone flat on the interstate!

I have no idea why it went flat. I'll be interested in hearing tomorrow what story the tire has to tell!
