Along the Way...

The Washington Post has an annotated version of Cohen’s opening statement in which he makes three explosive charges:

“Mr. Trump knew about the release of the hacked Democratic National Committee emails ahead of time… Mr. Trump knew from Roger Stone in advance about the WikiLeaks drop of emails.”
“Mr. Trump knew of and directed the Trump Moscow negotiations throughout the campaign and lied about it… And, so, I lied about it, too… Mr. Trump’s personal lawyers reviewed and edited my statement to Congress about the timing of the Moscow Tower negotiations before I gave it.”
“He asked me to pay off an adult film star with whom he had an affair, and to lie to his wife about it… Mr. Trump directed me to use my own personal funds from a Home Equity Line of Credit to avoid any money being traced back to him that could negatively impact his campaign… The president of the United States wrote a personal check for the payment of hush money as part of a criminal scheme to violate campaign finance laws.”

Underscoring the significance of the testimony, it will be carried by all broadcast and cable television networks.

  2. Playbook: “Republicans are going to do their best to remind the public that [Cohen's] testimony reeks of opportunism as the man is on the brink of prison. But so few people have made it into Trump’s inner circle, and Cohen was in it for a decade. That’s why this is incredibly compelling. Now he’s going to prison with little else to lose, and a man with nothing to lose in a circumstance like this seems like he will have a lot to say.”

  3. “Chicago will elect its first African-American female mayor after former federal prosecutor Lori Lightfoot and Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle won enough votes Tuesday amid a record field of 14 candidates to move on to an April runoff election,” the Chicago Tribune reports.

“It’s only the second time Chicago has had a runoff campaign for mayor.”

    1. So you beat this late-riser to it. I'm predicting that Lightfoot will win the runoff. I think much of Preckwinkle's support came from the party organization (she became chair of the Cook County Democratic Party a few months ago when the previous chair lost his bid for re-election as County Assessor). I don't expect that to ramp up very much.

    2. Lightfoot had 17.5% of the vote, Preckwinkle 16.1%, Daley 14.7%, and the fourth-place finisher (not Mencoza) 10.7%. Very widely split. I wonder what the results would have been if Chicago had had a preferential ballot rather than a jungle primary.

  5. Half the day is being wasted by Republicans on the Oversight Committee using valuable time to complain about the Oversight Committee Chair and proceedings and to discredit Cohen. The non-Republicans on the Committee are using the time to ask questions relating to DT. True colours are flying like banners.

  6. This evening I offered a Book Repair Workshop for the Library staff. It went well. The reason I did it is to hopefully put myself out of a volunteer job. I no longer have the desire to do the deed, as I am busy elsewhere.

  7. Doc's showed an hour late, having an awful day. Both preggers, lol! Both due the beginning of May. I hadn't taken my BP meds to help with the blood draw, so she wasn't happy with the BP, but not too worried either. Otherwise, delighted. Waiting on bloodwork results. Love these women.

  9. Edited comment:

Delighted is good; we like it! [grin]

The parts of Mr. Cohen's testimony that particularly please me are the bits about bank fraud, wire fraud, and tax fraud. Especially the first two.

  10. GOP Didn’t Defend Trump Against Cohen Accusations [Click] David Frum: “Michael Cohen’s testimony to the House Oversight Committee was uncontradicted….not one Republican member of the committee breathed one word in defense of the leader of their party.”

    1. "Even the allegations Cohen could not corroborate are all so hideously plausible that the most pro-Trump Republicans on the Oversight Committee shied from gainsaying them." Emphasis added.

    1. So I hear; I will have to look up some reporting and analysis about it. Some intelligence on the Intelligence Committee would be very welcome, certainly.

    4. Spelling and link both corrected. Maybe I need a bit more coffee.

There is a video (subtitles optional) of AOC’s questioning of Cohen on the front page of The Guardian. [Click] I can’t figure out how to like to it directly, but just scroll down the page. Yep, very good. Strange that there wasn't a video of the questioning by "my representative" [chokes], the [in]famous Devin Nunes.

  12. Dear Leader does two belly-flops in one day: Hanoi and DC. The lead story on the NHK international news this morning was Trump throwing in the rag in the NK talks, and the second was Cohen's testimony. I'm not yet tired of winning.

    1. Bloody hell! Maybe if I weren't a Science Fiction reader I wouldn't see the potential for such bacteria to be bread to liquefy humans as efficiently as nematodes, but I am and I do, and it scares me out of my mind.
