  1. I got and marked my ballot today (Thursday), and it goes into the mail tomorrow. Vote by mail is certainly convenient.

ALERT: The Trump administration has a plan to drastically curtail protests in DC, shutting down space in front of White House, charging massive fees, & banning stages & sound systems for rapid-response demonstrations. Deadline for comments? Monday, Oct 15.

  3. On Thursday, I had my annual eye exam, then picked up 7 bags of river rock, weed cloth, and good gloves, then on to get some pound-in edging, compost bags, new composter filter, and a fairy chime for good measure, then stopped two places for groceries. Got home, unloaded all to garage or kitchen and slowly put away the many items I’d brought into the house. Imagine my surprise, nay: shock!, to discover that the single-serving glass soda bottle I’d just carried in from the car, which I had reused for water a few days ago but left in the car drink holder opened, contained both water and a sadly drowned mouse!! !!! Amazing that the sizeable mouse got into the bottle in the first place. But I had clearly been driving all over town all day with it in the drink holder! (No doubt a product of wearing sunglasses everywhere despite the rain because of my dilated eyes.) I tell you, I sat right down and thought long and hard about whether by chance I had mindlessly sipped any of it while driving! But I am sure I did not. =Whew!= Rather, I sipped my fresh, homemade iced coffee, and later bought a small bottle of cold water, as I was hot from lugging the bags of stones in the rain.
I was feeling so sad for the mouse until I recalled that the varmint had somehow gotten INTO my car!

    1. Egad! I think you would have been very likely to have noticed the mouse had you gone to drink from the bottle-- it would have felt odd when you picked it up. And one can feel empathy for the mouse. That's one of the great things about using a dish of beer to get rid of slugs and snails--if they are such lushes as to drink themselves to death, it serves them right!

    2. The funny thing is that I didn’t notice at all when I picked up the bottle of mouse and carried it into the house! But I suppose hefting it would have been a more delicate weighting. Still, they don’t weigh much!

    3. Poor mouse! He was thirsty, so he squeezed into the bottle to drink, and then couldn't get out. And he was probably in the car to start with in an effort to get out of the rain.

  4. Why you have (probably) already bought your last car [Click] The photos from New York are stunning. Darned if I have been able to pick out the alleged automobile in the first one, but I can see one horse and infer the presence of another in the second photo. On this morning's NHK news there was a feature about a project in Australia testing transport of hydrogen to power automobiles by turning it into ammonia, shipping that in liquid form by tanker truck, and decomposing it into hydrogen and nitrogen at fueling stations for hydrogen powered vehicles. That's certainly interesting; I had seen news of a renewable power station that stored excess electricity by using it to make hydrogen from water, then into ammonia, then decomposing the ammonia as needed to generate electricity when the wind was inadequate to satisfy demand. With distribution problems solved, hydrogen power (either from fuel cells or internal combustion engines) certainly has things to recommend it over batteries.

    1. Sure, in cities. But not in rural areas. There are places in Vermont you “can’t git there from here.” It would be vastly impractical to keep enough Ubers (or anything else) available to service remote areas.

    2. Well, it all bears thinking about. Horse-powered transport lasted longer in the countryside than in the cities, too.

  5. Gee! From politicalwire.com:

O’Rourke Raised $38.1 Million In Three Months
October 12, 2018 at 9:36 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

“Rep. Beto O’Rourke raised an astonishing $38.1 million in three months, as Democrats in Texas and nationwide showered him with donations for his bid to oust Sen. Ted Cruz,” the Dallas Morning News reports.

“The haul smashed previous records for a U.S. Senate contest, and assures that the hard fought race, already the nation’s costliest, remains on top of the 2018 list.”

“O’Rourke’s haul is more than triple the $12 million that Cruz said he raised from July through September.”

    1. Good for Beto!

Not exactly news. I'm sorry to have it verified all the same.

      Uh-oh!

    2. I wish I knew which two dozen races those were. In particular, whether any of them are in Illinois.

  6. I've been donating to Beto from the beginning because Cruz turns my stomach.

  8. Our neighbors across the street are hosting a Dianne Feinstein fundraiser (as if she needs more funds); coming home from Costco a little while ago I saw there were two or three Highway Patrol squad cars there as well, which seemed odd. As I was walking across the street to tell folks there were two more parking places in front of our garage, one of the CHP's greeted me; it didn't look like they were apprehending malefactors, so after exchanging the time of day I said I thought it was odd they should be there, and he said it was because DiFi herself was going to attend. (This in one of the most solidly right-wing neighborhoods anywhere.) Interesting.

    1. Wow, Alan! I'd have gone to that. She really took the heat about Kavanaugh.

    2. I would have been able to attend for the sake of neighborliness, but for one thing, I don't own appropriate clothing. For another I will never forget her vote for the war in Iraq, her office's response (in her name) to my request that she not do it, or her subsequent claim that she didn't know what she was voting for--that Bush the Younger deceived her. Up until that point I had voted for her every time she ran for statewide office, but never again. She doesn't need fundraisers--she has plenty of money. She is superannuated, and her opponent in this year's election (for whom I voted) has significantly better bona fides for high public office than she did when she first ran for the Senate.

P.S.: Last night I found my father's stepdad on the voters roll for 1918-1924, and he was a registered Socialist--which fits with a story my father told me.

    3. Ah, I see. Hillary also lacked the Iraq War foresight that Bernie and Howard Dean shared.
