  1. Hot and humid here again today, though sunny.

    1. The cooling trend has started here. Heavy clouds with rain off and on. The preceding 80-degree days were very pleasant.

    2. It's comfortable in the rest of the house, but my attic was so hot, even with the floor fan, that I had to turn on the air conditioning.

  2. So, how about that photo out front? Do you know what it actually is?

    1. It looks like a view up to a skylight of sorts?

    2. Whew! Much less scary when one realizes it isn't a hallway!

    3. It is indeed, Susan! And it dates back to about 1900...! It's in the Inn at Shelburne Farms here in Vermont. The skylight is in the bathroom! Ha!! The thing that looks like a darkened window is actually as textured window in a large walk-in closet. Because of the skylight above, there is natural light in the closet. Yet because it is a textured window the bathroom maintains its privacy. The thing that looks like it goes to an attic is, therefore, actually in the wall. I imagine it is the way to access some pipes.

It is really stunning to walk into the normal-sized bathroom and see this really high ceiling and skylight!! :-D

  3. At my house today, the temp hit 82F. So I had to take a long cool-down break from my outdoor landscaping.
But! I finished the necessary work by dark. Yay!!

  4. Ironic to be spending two hot, humid days outside shoveling dirt to make space for placement of our upcoming heat pump condenser. Ha!

During my break, I watched the Weather Channel to catch up on Hurricane Michael. What a storm!!

Still strengthening as it made landfall:
Pressure 919mb!! 3rd lowest of any storm to hit the US.
    155mph highest-end Cat 4 (in October!)
(Cat 5 begins at 157mph) Gusts to 173mph

There were birds in the eye of the hurricane.
For reference, Wilma holds the record with a pressure of 882. Cat 5 Katrina’s sustained winds hit 185mph, but it's pressure only got down to 922mb.

This one was monster enough! It is the worst storm (first Cat 4) ever to hit the Florida Panhandle. And this storm never cycled or weakened, it just kept getting stronger, even when it met the coastline. Storms are definitely different than they used to be.

    1. Holy Cow. I hadn't looked at the news since breakfast, and then only at some of the political news.

  7. [Discussion of Hurricane Michael takes place]

She: But there's no global warming, eh?
He: Oh no; it's Hillary Clinton's fault!

    [ironic laughter]
